(I need something to think about besides the debacle of my day)

It's a piece of boulder opal that really does look like a chocolate cookie. I think I could probably make cookies that look like this, if I could figure out how.

Acelightning's suggestions sound worth a try, and I'm sure you have some ideas of your own, but here's my own attempt at reverse engineering that lovely thing into an edible thing: Have you ever made cake-mix cookies? Here's a recipe for devil's food cake-cookies, but the gist is that you buy boxed cake mix (probably not your speed, I know) and modify the fresh ingredients to turn it into cookie dough instead of cake batter. I only mention this because they tend to make neat, round, tender-chewy cookies with a cracked surface much like the one above. So if you made chocolate cake-cookies, maybe you could fill the cracks with iridescent/rainbow frosting, then add a very thin layer of glaze to make the whole thing shine??

It really does!

And I bet you could. You know those stained-glass cookies people make by melting jolly ranchers in the center of, say, a rolled-and-cut-out star-shaped cookie? (I have a friend who makes those at Christmastime.) So, you could do that with a chocolate cookie. The trick would be getting the cracks natural-looking and having the candy just in those spots.

Edit: Okay, here's my idea. Roll chocolate-cookie dough really thin. Wrap it around a jolly rancher--totally cover the candy. Bake.

... Problems: ratio of candy to cookie may be too heavy on the candy, and it may melt into a gloppy mess. Also, you don't get the cool mix of colors, unless you use more than one Jolly Rancher, in which case you have an even bigger problem of candy-to-cookie ratio.

Maybe try melting smaller candies?

How about bashing up the J. Ranchers into smaller chunks, in a paper bag, with a hammer?

that's what I was going to suggest. I saw a recipe for stained glass cookies when I was a kid that called for making a "frame" out of sugar cookie dough and filling the void with crushed hard candies. I may try to make theses some day.

(Here is what those Jolly Rancher cookies look like--really like stained glass.)

I. Adore. Opal. And that's a stunner.

May rainbow shine out from any slag you experience today, and darknesses be rich, full of good meaning, and comforting.

I think the challenge with edible irridescence is that it requires microscopic structures at the scale of the wavelength of light. For those to stand up to the moisture of ordinary humidity, they have to be insoluble in water. Which means they'll have terrigle "mouth feel." Clearly the carapice of an irridescent insect could be non-toxic, and perhaps even digestible, but it would feel like eating cookies with fingernail shavings.

That stone is gorgeous. I WANT! I WANT!

As for making a cookie that looks like that, I'd take vanilla and chocolate refrigerator cookie dough. Mostly make the cookie out of chocolate, make a few "cracks," use a little bit of vanilla in the cracks, and then put some hard candy bits into the cracks, letting them melt as the cookie bakes.

I saw someone do this on Food Network to get a stained glass effect for a gingerbread house (she won the competition).

This makes me think of those crinkle cookies that show up around Christmastime, with the powdered sugar on top that cracks and shows the fudgy chocolate cookie beneath. I wonder if that kind of recipe could be adapted so instead of powdered sugar it's cocoa or something else dark, and instead of fudgy chocolate for the base it's something like what others described above for multicolored dough.

So cool!
Yes, this totally looks like a cookie.
The opal-y bits could be melted hard candy maybe? I'm not sure how you do that, but surely there's a way?
If you do try please post pictures!

Edit: Or maybe gummies. That way the cookie would be more edible since hard candy would probably crack a tooth.
Or maybe even melted sprinkles?

That is beautiful--I love boulder opals.

And it does look like a cookie. Good luck on the making it happen idea. (-:
