It's a piece of boulder opal that really does look like a chocolate cookie. I think I could probably make cookies that look like this, if I could figure out how.
I think the challenge with edible irridescence is that it requires microscopic structures at the scale of the wavelength of light. For those to stand up to the moisture of ordinary humidity, they have to be insoluble in water. Which means they'll have terrigle "mouth feel." Clearly the carapice of an irridescent insect could be non-toxic, and perhaps even digestible, but it would feel like eating cookies with fingernail shavings.
