If you can bear exactly the kind of terrible review we've been dreading ever since we heard of The Seeker, read on, then hit your keyboards.

BostonNow, one of the wee free rags I read on my daily commute, reviewed this awful movie, noting correctly that it was made "cash in on the latest trend", that of movies in the Harry Potter vein. However, the reviewer lays much of the blame for the movie's failure on the books, saying it's "mostly because of lazy storytelling that carries over to the film". Argh!

(This is where I get overblown, for lack of time to write more diplomatically.) I really really hope that this movie doesn't wreck the reputation of the books. To that end, I thought I'd say something here, in hopes of inspiring a friend or three to write a letter. I will if I have time, but I have a lot coming up this weekend (including a party to help throw), so this is at least both a reminder and a point of info.

What the hell?????????

Obviously the reviewer has never cracked open the books. I wish I could be that sloppy in my job and get away with it.

It's a classic, heroic story. What kid doesn't want to save the world? The novels obviously provide no shortage of material to work with, and the pieces of the puzzle fit together nicely in the end.

Unfortunately, that's mostly because of lazy storytelling that carries over to the film, which is full of awkward voiceovers and dialogue that tells us things we should be seeing and learning for ourselves. To make matters worse, the rest of the film is taken up by confusing, unnecessary plot points and disjointed cinematography.

...Is it just me, or do these paragraphs not follow one another to the point of being actually incoherent?

One of the reasons BostonNow is such a rag is that it's blog-based; any nitwit can sign up on their site to be "a reporter". So you should go, write a story about bad movie adaptations and people who disrespect children's lit. :)

(Personally I'm not a Cooper fan but it's glaringly obvious that what's wrong with the movie has nothing to do with the books, since the movie has nothing in commons with the books but the characters' names)

...You're a DiR fan? WOW!!!

Talk about things I didn't know.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] thedarkisrising is working on putting together testimonials to send Ms. Cooper's way, if you're interested...

Excellent. I may get a Boston now account just to do that!

I saw that this morning and put "write a letter to the editor" on my "things to do today" list too.

After having to call the paper, I found out that you have to send your letter to the editor to "tips@bostonnow.com". Unfortunately the work e-mail went down just about then, and I want the weight of the library behind me when I write. Tomorrow, since I'm working, it shall be done!
