Weeks ago, [livejournal.com profile] icecreamempress posted a link to this great comic about Mary Seacole and Florence Nightengale. I remember reading about Mary Seacole during my childhood summers in Jamaica; I knew she and Mrs. Nightengale had a rivalry, but of course they left that nasty (and unwarranted) brothel-keeping accusation out of the kids' books.

At any rate, because I am random, I turned this painting into this Obamicon:

And, well, today seemed like a good day to post this.

This is so cool! I resent that I never before heard of Mary Seacole, and I thank you for the introduction.

I hadn't hear of her before the PCA conference, at which a Ph.D. candidate doing her dissertation on Seacole presented in the Fat Studies division about Seacole's weight/body description in historical sources. Apparently Seacole is much better known in the UK than here.

That sounds like a really interesting analysis.

VIZ magazine ran a similar strip a year or so ago. I find it beyond cool that there is room in this world for two cartoon strips portraying a humorous rivalry between Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale.

OK, I'm done reading the man now, but the conflated word "obamicon" makes me want to submit an image of HP Lovecraft and call it "the Necronomobamicon."
