Behold my new default icon! Made for me by WD from a photo Tigerlily took of me, one of these four:

http://pics.livejournal.com/browngirl/pic/0003arp6/g18
http://pics.livejournal.com/browngirl/pic/00039qq7/g18

(Yes, I am being too lazy to determine proper sizing so I can embed the images in this post. I have chili to make and a Bambina to entertain.)

I asked Tigerlily to photograph me with wet hair so that one of these days I can ask a knowledgeable person "how do I get my hair to look like this all the time"? And because her photographs always make me look quite nice. :) The photo with the doll was just silliness. :D

Oh, your hair looks really awesome here - I can see why you'd like it to do this all the time!

Yeah, it would be really cool. I'll find out one day how to make my hair stay in curls (rather than tightening into a solid mass).

*blush* Thank you.

I should have stopped relaxing my hair years and years before I did!

Hot, sexy and adorable, and I love love love the hair! I'll ask my friend Sarah what product(s) she uses, as you two have similar hair.

Here's the info I got from my friend:

"Well I've used a few different things but have found that using John Freida Frizz Ease Curl Around shampoo and conditioner works best

Most nights I sleep on a satin pillowcase plus I never use a comb or brush. After shampooing I gently work the knots out with my fingers using a lot of the daily conditioner (which I don't rinse out). I'm the morning I spray my hair with water and if necessary I smooth a bit more conditioner in to tame the frizzies and to freshen my curls."

I should really get myself a satin pillowcase.

Thank her for me? And thank you, for thinking of me.

*beams and hugs you*

I love your hair. I don't know any black women here with black women's hair - all my friends are either almost shaven or straightened to helmet-shininess. So I don't know what black women's hair LOOKS like. Yours is lovely.

Er, that is, "untreated hair" and "looks like usually."

It also occurs to me that Americans sometimes use a capital B for Black - is there a rule to follow for this?

From: [identity profile] dan-ad-nauseam.livejournal.com
That tends to be an archaic usage.

I completely didn't know what my hair would do when I stopped straightening it--- I'd been straightening it my whole life! This process has really been a revelation.

Oh, on capitalizing/not capitalizing Black; I do as an indication that I'm discussing people and not colors, but it's not really a big deal, I think.

I wonder what proportion of black women straighten their hair? My observation here is about 90% of them, 5% braid it, and the other 5% trim it very very close to their heads.

Is it easier or more difficult to maintain, day to day, unstraightened? Obviously it no longer eats 6 hours of your life every 6 weeks, or whatever, not to mention the budget and the chemicals, but does it take less time each morning, too?

Here it's more like 80/10/10, but the vast majority still straighten their hair, I'd estimate.

It's much easier in all particulars. Instead of having to comb it in the mornings I just fluff it up with my fingers. Instead of having to roll it up in rollers after I wash it I can let it air-dry. It's much easier all around.

Because I'm a geek and I can't help it, "width = "75%" fixes it so the browser decides the exact size needed, but it's generally a good proportion.

Great pictures. :)

*laugh* Hey, all knowledge is useful. Thank you.

And isn't Tigerlily a great photographer? Most pictures of me are a black circle with a white crescent of teeth and ovals of glasses inset.
