So, MoveOn.org sent me this note:

Dear friend,

Thank you. Your name has been added to the petition and your comments will be delivered to your Senators and Representative.

A great way to make sure Congress feels a lot of heat on this is to spread the word to your friends and family so they know what's going on. You can just forward the sample letter below.

Spreading the word is critical, but please only pass this message along to those who know you -- spam hurts our campaign.

Thanks for all you do. --The MoveOn.org Political Action Team

Here's a sample message to send to your friends:

Hi,

The U.S. Senate just told us to sit down and be quiet. They passed a resolution condemning MoveOn.org and it has one purpose: To intimidate all of us who care about ending this war. To send a message that anyone who speaks unpleasant truths about this war will pay. To make everyone--especially politicians--think twice before they accuse the administration of lying.

We can't let that happen. I just signed a statement telling Congress that they won't intimidate me, and I'm going to keep speaking out until they force an exit strategy out of this awful war. Can you join me?

Thanks!

I feel as if I should have rephrased all this “in my own words” but at this point I’d rather just get it posted. It’s funny --- I actually disapproved of the particular ad. But I disapprove far more of being told that those of us who oppose the war should be, say, kicked out of the country (as Senator McCain said), and I approve of MoveOn.org in general. (That Senator Obama voted for that resolution just breaks my heart. I try not to be a one-issue voter, but, ack. No, he abstained!) I haven’t done nearly as much for the anti-war effort as I’d like to (but I could say the same for many other causes, and also there are only 24 hours in the day). And this I could do.

I don’t know if it’ll matter, in the end. I rather suspect it won't. But it matters to me.

Obama abstained, IIRC. Not that it did any good, nor do I think it shows the spine he needs. But it's better than being a quisling.

Oh, thank you for telling me this. I agree, he could have done better, but it's still better than being a quisling, which is the *perfect* word for those who voted for that motion.

Okay, this REALLY pissed me off, and I did put it in my own words. Thanks for the heads up.

Exactly. I didn't care for the ad but the Senate taking up their time to make themselves look good? Far worse.

I've been thinking a lot lately about what made ordinary people put their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in the cause of liberty.
