[livejournal.com profile] misia has written an essay of such clarity and intelligence about history that I think as many people as possible should read it, and I want to keep a link to it for myself. What I really wish is that I could make every person who says they don't like history read it, but that'd never happen.

Steam Engine Time: A Short Essay About Facts and History

I've been writer's blocked, so I've been thinking about the nature of creativity. One of the things I've been thinking about recently is interconnections, about how seemingly disparate things have unseen connections and how other seemingly disparate things interconnect to produce greater concepts than the sum of their progenitors. This process happens both in individual people's thoughts (I found a cool quotation about how creative people want to know about everything because one never knows what bits of knowledge will combine in one's head to produce new and better ideas) and in societies and as part of the processes of historical development.

That's a thesis paragraph, of a sort, but the essay will have to wait, unfortunately.
