These are by no means the only exceptional stories I've read recently, nor the only stories I want to make a note of. They're the ones I'm making a note of today.
WIPS, all born of
xmen_firstkink:
The Taste of Wine after Ambrosia by
tawabids. Charles/Erik, Charles/Moira, Charles/Shaw, NC-17 with warnings. It's an Ancient Greek AU that reads as if it should be written in dactylic hexameter. Every time I read an update I am astonished by the textures of the story, how beautifully it conveys an Ancient Greek and Mythological Greek setting. And Darwin as a god with Alex as his acolyte makes me ever so happy.
Everyday Love In Stockholm by
tahariel. Charles/Erik, one-sided Erik/Raven, Azazel/Raven, NC-17 with warnings. This is an AU which beautifully shows the sort of world Magneto would build if he won, and it's chilling and gorgeous and makes all kinds of psychological sense. (Also, after having seen so many examples of the "Raven is a substitute for Charles" trope, I find myself gleefully delighted at the dynamics here. Which is not to say that anyone is a flat out substitute for anyone else --
tahariel is far more subtle and talented than that.)
"Till Human Voices Wake Us and We Drown", on the kink meme and on Archive Of Our Own, by
sharpestscalpel. Charles/Erik, NC-17, only slightly dubcon. This story is sheer magic, and so much more complex, in a limpid and immersive way, than one would guess from the prompt/summary. It's a character study, it's the tale of springtime touching a soul in winter, it's a man and a selkie. And it's beautiful. (Also, some of the comments on
xmen_firstkink are just *awesome*. I love reading thoughtful comments.)
Completed Stories in one piece:
Narcissus by
aestheticized. Raven/Charles, Raven/Erik, Raven/Azazel, Raven/Angel, Raven/Destiny, Raven/Others. Rish. Raven's mutability lends her to stories about identity, and this one is just plain one of the best I've ever found. I love the details of Raven's relationship with her power and with who others see her to be.
A Force Unseen by
triedunture. Charles/Erik, hard R with warnings. In my comment I said this "redefines brinksmanship" and I have it labeled as such in my memories as well. I really love how this Erik has none of his sharp edges blunted, how he and Charles are deeply attracted, deeply stubborn, and deeply divided.
Sweeter Than Wine by a wonderful anon. Charles/Erik, PG-13 or maybe R, utterly darling. To end my post here's something light, sweet, and pitch-perfect. It's also set in Greek Mythology, in a brightly colored happymaking way. If you need a happy place, this story fits the bill.
