I was looking at my Memories category for recs and realized that I haven't recced many stories lately. The tales I meant to post aren't ready yet, so today seems like a good day to write a few notes about some of the many stories from this talented fandom which have impressed me, recently and in the past.

I wrote a recs post for these five and submitted it to [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon (though I may be too late).

The Ache in Every Song by [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose. "Early in their friendship Jadzia shares something personal with Nerys." I love stories that ably expand the fictional universe; I love stories that beautifully expand upon the canon characters with seamlessly fitting extrapolations. This story does both.

With All My Crooked Heart by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock. Gaila tells Uhura about the secret language of the Orion slaves. I love the secret language, which is beautiful linguistic science fiction, and I love the moment depicted and the threedimensionality of Gaila and Nyota in it.

But Then Face to Face by [livejournal.com profile] yalegirl03. This encounter between Montgomery Scott, stranded in the Mirror Universe, and the Charlene Masters there, reinvents a well-traveled trope in a charming and refreshing way.

Day Trip To Delta Vega by [livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces, in which Cadet Winona Butler is utterly awesome. So are Cadet Haf Eske and even that scallywag George Kirk. Also, once one glances away from the bright shining light of Winona's awesomeness, there's solid and intriguing worldbuilding and commentary on Starfleet's institutional culture.

Women's Revolutionary Law by [livejournal.com profile] merisunshine36. "When Gaila was four, she and her clan sister escaped to freedom in the Federation. But freedom, like everything else, comes with a cost. This is their story." I feel like anything I could say about this astonishing fictional autobiography would pale in comparison to it: the clearest praise I can give is to note how real it is, how real its protagonist Gailin is.

I also wanted to add this:

Superficial by [livejournal.com profile] medie, which is anything but. It's a portrait of Kitara, a half-Human, half-Klingon Starfleet Cadet, and her chance encounter with Captain One, and it's just brilliant.
