Year End Fandom Meme
Dec. 30th, 2010 01:39 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
From
cereta and
thistlerose, among others. My last meme of the year!
Your main fandom of the year?
Star Trek Reboot, whee!
Your favourite film watched this year?
Excluding Star Trek, and with honorable mention to How To Train Your Dragon for its visual beauty, The Libertine. The others I saw were pretty much just big noisy assortments of fun, but TL was a fascinating historical drama about a brilliant, brash, talented asshole. It was really nice to see Johnny Depp actually act rather than portray a quirk-overdosed cartoon character, and the whole thing was drenched in sex and wickedness. I'm just sorry I traumatized my roommate with it (sitting in a darkened room watching a man die of excellently-recreated-by-the-makeup-artists syphilis is a bit meepinducing).
But really, my favorite was Star Trek with fangirls this summer, at the Hatch Shell and then at
blcwriter's and
amazonziti's places.
Your favourite book read this year?
The problem is, I read a lot but little of it is in the form of novels. If I pick the Avatar: The Last Airbender artbook all of you will give me the side-eye, let alone Simply Quince or another such cookbook. I'm currently reading The Elements by Theodore Gray because I wanted to refresh my basic chemistry, and it's a ton of fun.
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Starlight by Muse, covered by Adam Lambert. That song just fills my soul with light every time. Honorable mention to City of Blinding Lights by U2 for the same reason; again, my favorite version is a cover, this time by the Tufts Beelzebubs.
Your favourite TV show of the year?
Top Gear. Three ridiculous British men somehow filling me with ludicrous amounts of joy. And Mythbusters remains a perennial fave.
Your favourite LJ community of the year?
Narrowly beating out
tmi_chix and
jim_and_bones, it's
where_no_woman! *cheers*
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Thanks in large part to
dsudis (and also to Ms. Bujold in releasing a new book) I've rediscovered the Vorkosiverse.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
I don't think I'll ever be interested in Kirk/Spock again, for reasons of fandom politics and fannish misogyny; I lost it exactly the same way I lost Frodo/Sam. I have even less patience for hatred of Nyota Uhura than I do for hatred of Rosie Cotton.
I do actually believe in Kirk/McCoy, and Spock/Uhura delights me, but I like being a multishipper, so it makes me sad to find myself disliking a pairing, no matter how pressing the reasons.
Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Richard Hammond.
Your TV girlfriend of the year?
... I don't think I have one right now. I need to fix that!
Your biggest squee moment of the year? The Fangirlventure in August. EEE! Seriously, my summer was full of wondrous fangirl meetups and shared fannish joy.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Both NUMB3RS and DC Comics. *waves wistfully*
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I thought Inception would be this for awhile, but it hasn't turned out to be. I can see why Sherlock Holmes is so popular both as steampunk and as modern-day versions, but I'm trying not to tumble in. And White Collar is very tempting (NYC! The Fed/charming expert dynamic! The OT3!) but I'd have two seasons' worth of episodes to catch up on and it's not really SF&F the way I prefer.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
muskratjamboree! Oh dear, I need to remember to apply for the time off!

Date: 2010-12-30 04:04 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed The Libertine when I watched it a few years ago. Yes, there's the syphilis squick factor, but Depp is so good. I love the opening monologue.
Also, I am so jealous of the East Coast fannish meet-ups. *howls into the snowy fields of the Midwest*

One day I'll get to the Midwest and meet you and other fannish friends there!

We're quite lovely in summer! Less to recommend us in winter, I fear.
Also, I got your card today (with prezie inside). Thanks so much, m'dear. And the card cover definitely made me smile. Happy Everything!

Date: 2010-12-31 04:41 am (UTC)TOS Uhura, in my mind, is very happy in a poly triad with Sulu and Chekov. They also comb the universe looking for interesting people to bring home for the night. They are much happier than TOS Kirk/Spock, who are an angst pairing.

Date: 2011-01-01 04:03 pm (UTC)It's funny. I like all manner of AU K/S, actually, genderswap and alternate universes and stories where they meet as teenagers. I think it's because those stories are too busy explaining their premises to take swipes at Uhura. But straight up AOS K/S I've given up on, no matter how well written.
I would love to read a story where Spock!Prime approves of AOS Spock/Uhura, actively and without anyone talking him into it, besides the one I wrote.
