Eventually, Don chuckles. Charlie tilts his head expectantly, stilling his fingers in Don's chest hair, but Don just lies there, eyes closed, smiling secretively. Out of patience, Charlie prods him insistently in the ribs, and Don laughs again, shaking his head, before he gives in and says, "That scar... yeah. Robin had the same reaction."

Don's smile twists when Charlie winces. He kind of deserved that answer, so he sets his head back down on Don's shoulder, sliding a hand across his chest to palm the scar on his bicep, while Don rubs Charlie's back, firm strokes along his spine. When Don says, "We shouldn't've done this," his voice is even and quiet, not angry or pleading as in the past, and he doesn't stop petting Charlie.

Charlie nods against Don's shoulder. It would be only fair to agree, not to mention true. But all he can say is, "You could've died."

Don sighs, reaching to pull Charlie atop himself. "But I didn't, Charlie," he replies, gently pushing Charlie's head down onto his chest, where Charlie can listen to his heartbeat, where Don can rest his chin in Charlie's curls. "I survived," Don whispers, and their fingers mesh over his new scar.

Written for the [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs100 January 2009 Rewind- Bullet, Blood, Luck, Survival. Titles from the Indigo Girls' "Land of Canaan", because.

This was one of those inescapable stories: I couldn't not write it. While I did, I reread "Finity"; I don't want it to be the sequel to that story, but maybe it is a sequel. Also, one day I should really write more about Don's meaningful scars.

*giggles cheerfully* I could make a whole drabble rewind out of it! Stories about Don's scars!

I see the echoes of Finity in this, but it's still its own story to me. It's wistful, heartrending, touching, hot and meaningful for the brothers and I adore you for writing it. I believe stories should make people feel things - feel *something* - and I enjoy both feeling your tales and the anticipation of not knowing what I'll feel when I begin.

It's nice to see Don and Charlie having a moment of peace. I'm looking forward to what happens next. Thank you for sharing this story. It shows how close they have become.

They really are wonderfully close, aren't they? Whether or not we write them like this. *big wicked grin*

No he didn't. Poor Charlie.

"We shouldn't've done this," his voice is even and quiet, not angry or pleading as in the past, and he doesn't stop petting Charlie.

Charlie nods against Don's shoulder. It would be only fair to agree, not to mention true. But all he can say is, "You could've died."

Aw. And that's why they have to have survival sex. ::nods:: I mean, clearly.

That is a lovely, perfect ending.

Aww, thanks! I'm so glad you're writing a bunch of them :)

How do you feel about Ian? I sort of accidentally fell in love with him again.

I *adore* Ian, I just don't have many stories about him.

I have one upcoming, if I can get it to work, but I don't think it showcases how much I love the real Ian very well. *wry grin*

LOL Does that mean you're torturing him?

Oh, no. I tend to show my love by torturing characters, actually, at least some of the time. Ian isn't the tormented one in this story.

Oddly enough, it's this line that really stuck with me:

"That scar... yeah. Robin had the same reaction."

I love the pause after scar and how he just says, "Yeah". It's so real, exactly what Don would say, that it just popped out of the story, making it even more wonderful! ^^ Such a simple thing, but so important nonetheless.

The other bit that I loved?

"...gently pushing Charlie's head down onto his chest, where Charlie can listen to his heartbeat, where Don can rest his chin in Charlie's curls."

*sighs happily*

^^ Thank you for the wonderful series! I'm extremely glad you wrote it, personally. <3

You should have seen the dance of delight I did. I rewrote that line several times, and finally got it to click, so for you to pull it out and highlight it just rendered me ecstatic.

Thank you. :)
