Shatter the Silence

I hope that works without breaking Friends Pages. A few brief thoughts below the cut.

Shortly I'm going to get offline for the day, to attend/help run a major event where I work. I thought about doing this but decided I needed to, because it's bigger than any one person. This is about being a fan who is also a person of color, and all the ways this has affected my interpretations of the media I consume, the stories and meta I create, and my interactions with my fellow fans.

My race and my culture are part of me, which I don't leave behind when I participate in fandom, and I'm not the only fan for whom this is true. Actually, it's true for all of us -- this is about whether we realize it or not, whether we are mindful of all we bring with us or not.

So here I am. I'm a fan, and I'm a Black woman, and I'm not the only one of either.
