"Self-flagellating" means beating himself with a flail/short multi-tailed whip. There is a scene in the original where Judge Turpin sings of his lust for Johanna and beats himself penitantly. The theory is that it beats the impure and unholy thoughts from you, leaving you chastized and cleansed. In this case, I think he just enjoys it. This scene is not included in the video versions.

I know what it is, I just didn't know it was in the original musical. I tend to be inarticulate about these things. :D

And I tend to over-explain things ;) -- It's a very creepy scene and I'm happy they left it out

Oh!

Sorry for not figuring out what your question was. Yeah, there's a scene in the stage musical where the theme of the Judge spying on her is elaborated. While he beats himself. To orgasm.

I was trying to do too many things at once and didn't make any sense. That is....wow. @___@ I can see why they left that bit out.

I have that phobia I forget the name of about soft vulnerable parts of the body getting cut up, specifically my neck or someone else's neck. It's a serious, I freak the fuck out phobia if I see someone getting choked or cut in the neck.

And did I see Sweeney Todd, holding my neck and wincing as I wanted to leap from the theatre.

Yes.

Because it was a musical.

*gives you a high collar, like Tim's*

I hear you. I have a particular horror of being burnt to death, and so far both times I've seen the movie I've covered my face when he throws her into the oven. Even when I was trying to make myself watch, I couldn't.

I enjoyed this movie as I'm a big fan of the musical. Aside from Bonham Carter's obvious lack of singing skills, the thing that drives me nuts about this production is casting Tobias Ragg as a child rather than the simple-minded young adult he's supposed to be. Then again, a friend of mine originated the role of Toby on Broadway so I'm probably biased ;) I do love how lovely Johanna's voice is. Often, you hear the actress playing the role forcing to get what I call an "operatic sweetness" out of her voice, going to reedy when she's in Fogg's Asylum and afterwards. This time, we get a simple, light voice and it makes me happy.

ZOMG, you know the original Toby?! WOW.

Also, I agree with you about Johanna. As soon as she started in on "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" I was transfixed.

I have a flinching horror of pale British guys taking their shirts off... and the movie really toned down the sex -- even the sex jokes -- from the play, so the flagellation scene would have felt way out of balance. (Of course maybe they were trying to tone down what they could to avoid an NC-17... it wasn't like they were going to be able to leave out the blood.)

OK, to be serious for a moment *giggle* they did tone down the sex a *lot*. Anthony and Johanna didn't even *kiss*, which I frankly would have liked for characterization purposes let alone prurient ones. I guess it's the difference between the late '70s and the late aughts, plus with all the violence they may indeed have been trying to avoid an NC-17. *nod*

i saw this at the boston common loews last week, and i always love a movie in town, but omg, the greasy fastfood double teriyaki chicken MEATY MEATPILE queasy-making tummy disaster from sarku i ate beforehand probably wasn't necessary.

Oh hon. *pets you soothingly* Also, eee, the Boston Common! That's where I saw it too, on Christmas Day.

(And I can't believe the idiots who up and left, but at least they did rather than wrecking the movie for everyone.)

Every time Mrs Lovett said "Mistah J", I cringed.

But, man, I don't think I could have handled the awesome had there been a self-flagellation scene in the movie.
