Reinventing Wheels, Rewriting Stories

So, I'm thinking about my Summer Projects, because procrastination is fun. And I'm contemplating a slight dilemma.
I really want to write a story whose basic plot is "X Character has to Deal and Hold Things Together after the seeming loss of the most important person in X's life. Friends pitch in and help X with varying degrees of forcefulness and/or seductiveness. At end X gets their MIP back." (I'm trying to think of a published work with that plot --- there are plenty --- to use as an example.)
Specifically, I want to write it about Dick trying to keep things together while he thinks Bruce is dead.
Now, I was toying with scenarios for how to bring about such a situation, when it struck me that TPTB set one up already: JLA's Obsidian Age arc. I could just fit my story right in there, and I can still wrte the plot I'm really interested in without having to come up with the action-and-mystery-and-adventure side of things on my own.
However, if I use The Obsidian Age I need toinure myself to the completely ridiculous representation of the past as well as write a couple of characters out of my story whom I would have liked to use; also, it might be good practice for me to try coming up with an action-and-mystery-adn-adventure plot on my own.
OTOtentacle, I'm already trying something different with the story structure I'm thinking of. And I've crashed and burned too many times recently.
So, after that long explanation, a short poll:

I don't know when I'll be able to reply to all your comments, but I wanted to tell you how awesome it is to open my inbox to a flurry of intelligent, detailed, cheerful commentary on my stories. Thank you, a lot. :)
