Meme of First Lines, yet again

Mmm, Monday mornings.
One of the great things about the First Lines meme is reassuring your friends that you're actually writing. May was a hellacious month, but I have several stories of short-but-more-than-drabble length in rough draft form, and should hopefully be able to polish and post them in June and July. (And then I'll get to stories like my "Year of Troubles" linked tales that don't actually have text written yet.)
"Midsummer Pudding"
Remember the
shire_kitchen Recipe Fic Challenge? Contemplating my audience there, I submitted my het and gen bunnies for it. This is the slash bunny I had for it.
"Hullo, Sam," Merry said, bouncing into the kitchen. "What's that you're making?"
"That Certain Conversation"
Because I actually do think about the implications of the "cheerful nonmonogamy" I've written into my Shire.
It was as pretty a day as Bilbo had ever seen, sunny and bright.
"Breredon"
I have such a fascination with hobbit OCs. I'm probably going to get roasted on some Mary Sue site for this one, but I put Hawthorn through several tests, and I don't think she is a Mary Sue.
"So how," Pippin murmured into Hawthorn's soft brown hair, his arms snug round her little waist, "did such a lovely lass come to grace hoary old Budgeford? I know you weren't here when last I turned by Bolger Hall."
"A Drop of Ocean"/"This Drop of Sea" (which title sounds better, do you think?)
Rosie didn't know how she knew. She just knew.
"Party Games"
I've been working on this off and on for a YEAR now. Goodness gracious, that's ridiculous.
'Sam, yes, Sam, just like that...'
"Near Kin"
Oh, I have so much to say in this story. I'm just not sure if I can accomplish it.
Mr. Merry always put Sam in mind of thunder.
"Telling the Dream"
Just a bit of hobbitsmut. Right now the fandom doesn't really need a trivial, fluffy F/M, with
daffodil_bolger writing an amazing, profound F/M series, so I'm letting this one wait a bit for another day.
Hazy summer sunlight and the Brandywine's babble...."Merry." Frodo's voice, warm in his ear, Frodo's touch, seemingly all over his skin.... "Mmm, yes." Merry moans, sinking into warmth....'
I'm also still working on Patching Up and A Full Fair Day, which were profiled during WIP Amnesty Week, so there's no point re-posting their first lines here.
"The Virtues of Pajamas"
Crackfic for
pikakao, based on some of her drawings and one in specific. (I should make a mental note to link to that drawing in the story.)
"Emergency Preparedness Tips," Bart read aloud, while Wally gritted his teeth and for the umpteenth time did not swear. "Bart, I don't think I need---"
"Best Man"
petronelle proposed a challenge, and I'm working on a story for it.
So, when she floats into his room a few hours later and sits on the side of his bed he has no idea what to think. <--not the actual first line, but the first line of what I have.
"1001 Uses For A Cape"
This is the long-owed OT3 story I promised
issendai, but my Tim-voice in it is still not quite there. I may need to find a beta for it. Or several more issues of YJ.
"Hey, look at that, I think the truck's crashing!" Bart exclaimed, swerving sharply. Tim dug his fingers into Bart's slick shoulders to hang on. "There's no time---"
"Shades of Red"
This one definetely needs a beta (it will probably be my story for
making_sausage), and may never get off the ground. I've found the distance between what I want to say and what I'm succeeding in saying frustratingly wide in this one.
"Well, she's almost certainly Ariadne Pinxit." Tim takes off the large brooch that housed the facial scanner; he already plugged the scanner into the laptop as soon as the hotel room door shut behind them.
"Inkblots"
I think I finally have a Tim Drake in my head, though I'm not sure how recognizeable he is to anyone else. I'm working on that. Oh, and the fact that there's no slash stories based on the issue of Gotham Knights I'm basing this on still boggles me. Someone else must have written about that scene...
Sometimes, Tim sees patterns at the edges of his vision.
"Than are Dreamt"
Even before i read the anvilly canon on the subject, I noticed some parallels between Steph and Jason. (I'm also capable of seeing that the sky is blue. Note my brilliance.) Besides, I like writing het.
Steph was not going to stagger, and she was not going to yawn, no matter how damn tired she was.
A bonus: a bit of original fic I'm working on for my other journal, a sequel to my 2003 NaNoWriMo novel. If people are interested I'll post a link here when it's done.
"Dessi's Moment"
Sling in hand, Dessi narrowed her eyes; a flock of doves was whirling up out of the trees, disturbed by Dinas, and she slung pebbles at them as she watched them fly.

Date: 2005-06-06 03:33 am (UTC)It's a little scary trying out new character voices in a new fandom, but -- we're here for you, lady.

Date: 2005-06-06 08:26 am (UTC)It's a little hard to tell without seeing more of the story, but my initial reaction is that I like the second version better.
