More Writing Meta: Worlds I Want To Write

Give me a day off, and look out. *laugh at myself*
One of the reasons I edged over into DC Comics fandom is that there are things I can't write in Tolkien fandom (and not just cars and slang). I've been thinking about those things, and about if/when I'll return to original fic (well, the RPS AU historicals are fairly close to original fic, but I digress).
One of the reasons I read and write fanfic is the desire to see more of these characters than canon, since, well, the books and movies are only so long. That extends to subject matter; I often wish I thought of more non-romance-related plots and more action plots, but a lot of that is covered by one, canon, and two, other fanfic authors' works, and I have a hard time writing something I feel someone else has already written (one reason I rarely wrire first times). Because of this, one of the reasons I write so many romantic plots is wanting to see the characters happy as they often can't be within canon, because, well, unpleasant things happen during the course of the story; writing such stories feels a tiny bit like making them happy, at least for that duration. And, because of *that*, I feel guilty when I write really traumatic stories for them.
But there *are* themes I want to explore with those traumatic stories, and themes I want to explore and haven't yet, either in hobbitfic (such as what Minas Tirith looks like to hobbits---
rabidsamfan, there's a tale of yours I'll be reading once it's completed---- and through that cities in general) or elsewhere (such as people who can fly and glow, hence my dip into DC fic). So I was thinking about what some of those are.
After all, different themes fit different settings. I want to write more about a society under occupation, such as the Shire during the Troubles (if I thought anyone would read it, I'd write a fan novel, the length of "The Rose and the Book", primarily about OCs who live through and/or die during the Troubles). I want to write about the gloriously dark, seedy underbelly of cities, which Gotham is pretty much tailor made for, once I get a handle on the Bat-family. I want to write about small agrarian societies and the incredible complexity of the one I live in, about ordinary folk living seasonal lives and very extraordinary kids dealing with their lives in a highly colored world.
I think there's more, but that's enough meta for now. I have stories to get back to. ;)

Date: 2005-01-17 02:58 pm (UTC)I would! But I doubt you want to write something just for one person.
Meta seems like a fun place. Maybe one day I'll want to visit.

Date: 2005-01-17 03:38 pm (UTC)btw...I read almost all your stories, although I'm not a usual commentor....I'm actually (*blushes*) not really a LOTR devotee, so I hesitate to comment lest I reveal myself as a LOTR moron.
However, I so enjoy your writing, and just wanted to tell you so.
