My friends [livejournal.com profile] caitri and [livejournal.com profile] cappyhead sent me these wonderful links to ancient music:

The Oldest Extant melody

The Hurrian Hymn dates from around 1400 BC, making it a staggering 3400 years old

(I can't remember if they noted which dialect, tho)

I was astonished to learn that classically, epic poetry is defined not by subject matter, but by meter, and that this is a source of the stock epithets.

Every time listen to that Peter Pringle clip, I get a small sad that there isn't an entire CD of him singing the whole thing.

I couln't help but think that one of my best dulcimer tunes, "Nifty Renaissancy-Sounding Tune Cooked Up while Waiting for a Clouded Out Observing Session", sounds a lot like I stole it from the oldest extant melody. I feel so unoriginal.

Thank you for these!! Each one was more beautifully haunting than the last. Well, I did listen to them out of order (2-1-3).
