I was astonished to learn that classically, epic poetry is defined not by subject matter, but by meter, and that this is a source of the stock epithets.

I couln't help but think that one of my best dulcimer tunes, "Nifty Renaissancy-Sounding Tune Cooked Up while Waiting for a Clouded Out Observing Session", sounds a lot like I stole it from the oldest extant melody. I feel so unoriginal.
