Some topics I should write angry journal entries about, in no particular order:

1) " “We’re going to watch Pennsylvania. Go down to certain areas and watch and study and make sure other people don’t come in and vote five times.” -- Donald Trump, calling for voter intimidation whilst saying Secretary Clinton can only win by cheating.

(I used to have a friend who claimed that the Black Panthers stood outside polls and intimidated [presumably White] voters. I wonder what she'd think of this? Am not going to go ask.)

2) the Twitterstorm of hatred against the accomplished, poised, and non-coincidentally Black Gabby Douglas of the US Women's Gymnastics team.

3&4) People often think that anything religious (or at least their particular religion) is safe for children. People, often the same people, also think that anything LGBTQ is not safe for children. This essay [would be] brought to you by two items in particular: my desire to find and re-argue with everyone who used to argue with me that slash inherently deserved a higher and/or "explicit" rating than het of equivalent detail level did, and that a story with a prince kissing his [male] knight goodbye before the knight goes to kill a dragon would be Totally Inappropriate for kids whereas a story with a princess kissing her [male] knight goodbye would be a-ok (no word on female knights); and how a movie titled Patmos royally fucked up and traumatized single-digit me (it's about St. John's exile/imprisonment on that island while he wrote The Book of Revelations. It was so graphic and terrifying I can still recall it.)

5) Hidden Figures:The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race (2016) soon to be a major motion picture, whose trailer made me cry in delight and anger.

I kind of wish I could gather a group of people from Elbows, or the Nose, or my high school, or various other places I've hung out where a majority of the members would never have believed this could be possible, and show them this. Another attendee should be former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who said women aren't as good at math as men, while we're at it.

6) Last but not least: THIS IS NOT JAMAICAN JERK SEASONING and I feel like I'm dishonouring my grandmothers to not go tell this lady as much. And since you read this far, here's a proper recipe for jerk seasoning:

Jerk paste, approx 1 cup:

6 tbsp whole Jamaican Allspice, crushed
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 tsp ground cinnamon
12 scallions, cleaned and chopped
2-3 Scotch Bonnet (Habenero) peppers without the seeds (or with if you like it REALLY hot)
2 tbsp fresh thyme or 1 tbsp dried
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp salt (I usually only use about a teaspoon)
1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp soy sauce

Instructions from the person I took this from and edited it:
Crush the allspice in a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder or pepper grinder. Leave it fairly coarse in good sized chunks. Combine all the ingredients in a blender or food processor. Process until liquified and well blended. Pour it in a jar (glass only--it eats plastic) and refrigerate until you are ready to use it.

Which reminds me... instead of ranting online I should go eat something.

thank you for the recipe! would leaving out the cinnamon make it not-jerk seasoning? it sounds delicious but that's not my favorite.... (i often substitute ginger in my own recipes, don't know what that would make it either....)

DAMN YEAH GETTING FOOD IS A GOOD IDEA :)

I think you can leave out the cinnamon. Maybe add a couple more allspice berries?

As much as I love ginger, it would... change the flavor profile here, I think.

thanks! not being a cinnamon-eater i don't know what it does to a flavor profile, i confess. i am delighted by the prospect of MORE ALLSPICE though :)

(3) Boy, I know a lot of people who wouldn't think my theology was safe for children.

(6) Is Jamaican allspice different from the sort I get at Penzey's?

(General) Life sure does suck, and it's humans' fault, and quite unnecessary, in my view.

Nope, it's the same allspice, maybe literally. Jamaica is a major allspice producer. :)

Your theology involves thinking, an activity many people consider unsuitable for children.

Thank you for the recipe. I can marinade a chicken in this and then roast it, right? (I don't have a grill to barbecue it on.)

For the oil, I have peanut, olive, coconut, and butter. Which would work best? I'm guessing coconut or peanut?

Olive or peanut, yeah. And you can totally roast a chicken with this on it. I'd recommend jointing it before seasoning and roasting the pieces at the high end of the scale, and for chicken I like to add a sprinkle of brown sugar or drizzle of molasses to the mix.

WOOOOOT \o/

For tofu, add another source of umami that you like as well as the soy sauce, to up the savoriness.

Neither of my grandmothers would have fed someone something they were allergic to, and neither would I. :) And lime juice sounds awesome! The rosemary, though, is too piney for the flavor profile. Cook's Illustrated added it but I disagree with them. Better to triple the parsley and leave out both the thyme and scallions.

Trump’s gone from imaginary miscreants voting 5 times, to 10, to 15 . Since that kind of voter fraud is REALLY RARE, and voter suppression is /way more common/, see North Carolina as just one example, well, Mr. Trump, get out of here with your crude attempts at racism.

Three more months of this bullshittery. (And now, with the personnel changes to his campaign, it’ll be even more overt.) Siiiiigh. I grit my teeth.

Unlike all of Trumps insinuations, he gave direct orders, which, if followed will be all about voter intimidation, even if he pretends it isn't. It creeps me the hell out.

And yes, I just saw the trailer for Hidden Figures, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

My greatest fear is that by November, people will have forgotten the various moments of complete and utter horseshit that have come out of Trump's campaign and thought, well, he's not {thing I fear about Hillary}, so...

Anyone who thinks all religion is "safe" for children and all LGBTQ matters are not needs to meet my small fanperson. That two girls might marry is of no difficulty for her. The relative historical "truth" of the Bible is something we are still struggling with.

Dude, I have made jerk seasoning all of three times, and even I know, that's not jerk seasoning.

You are entirely right about all of the above. The Gabby Douglas twitter shitstorm was appalling.
