The Olympics [a smidge]

I remembered the lyrics to the Jamaican National Anthem! And sang them along with Usain Bolt's medal ceremony. Bwee.

I have not gotten to see nearly as much as I would have liked of this year's Olympics, but I'm glad they are happening. I always love the Olympics. These are just plain the sort of sport I actually enjoy watching.

Does anyone remember ABC's Wide World of SPorts? "The thrill of victory.... and the agony of defeat." *cue skier rolling ass=over-teakettle down a snowy hill* I wish that were still on, a weekly dose of track/swimming/gymnastics/etc. But I'm glad the Olympics are on right now, even if I haven't seen much of them. Yet.

One of the founders of Burning Man uses a parabolic reflector to light the cauldron that resides in Center Camp for the duration of the event. It's happy-making to consider where she must have gotten the idea. (And I should really try to make it to the official lighting this year. I've fed the cauldron - they keep a pile of firewood nearby, and everyone is invited to add a piece as they pass during the week - but I've never seen it be lit.)

I wasn't going to watch the Olympics this year. Between the corruption, the displacement, the poor management, the failures to provide clean and safe spaces to compete - I was just going to skip.

But I couldn't. Because I really do love watching these athletes competing. Rooting for various countries, not just the USA.

I've realized that I stopped caring years ago about national sports, even baseball. I really only pay attention to sports anymore when they're on a world stage. The World Cups. The Olympics. Those are what I love.

I finally gave up on NBC entirely, and have been enjoying the CBC and the BBC, both of which are less packaged, more interested in the sports, and, while they root for their own countries, they also root for good effort and well-done events.

I used to love Wide World of Sports, too. I miss Jim McKay.

Sam was interested in fencing, so we went to NBC's Olympic site and they were able to watch with no problem, didn't have to make an account or tell it how you get tv, etc. I think they have everything.

Oh yes. That's how I knew the cartoons were over. *grin*

I had to confirm that I was a Uverse subscriber to watch the Opening Ceremonies, but it was a one-time-only thing; after I did, it said that henceforth any time I opened the site from my home IP address it would recognize me automagically. Perhaps you did that during the London games?

Bill Littlefield's "Only A Game" on NPR has replaced wide world of sports for me. Where else can I hear about competitive kickball? I download the podcast and listen to it while I run. PLUS Bill L writes and recites doofy limericks.

I spent a lot of my childhood Saturdays watching ABC's Wide World of Sports. I found myself recently wishing it was still on. I felt much more connected to Olympic athletes when seeing some of the trials. And I saw Willie Mosconi beat Minnesota Fats at a pool game on that show.
