In case you want to try again:
hitting Ctrl-L to bring up the Layer dialog box and using the opacity slider seems to be the easiest way:

seems to be the easiest way.
The harder way seems to be using layer masks and adding alpha channel adjustments:

Also, if you're using GIMP because you're on Linux, both MyPaint and Krita are far more user-friendly programs for art purposes. :)
