Which I wish I'd seen before, not least yesterday, International Women's Day. With thanks to whichever of my friends reflagged this so I discovered it.

Now where did I put that box of Trefoils? ETA More seriously, see Purlewe's comment.

I buy Girl Scout cookies righteously. Even though they aren't sellinf Dulce de Leches here for some deranged reason. And think on, though it's Lent, today is Sunday-- every Sunday a little Easter-- so I can eat a cookie today. I'll ask Chun Woo to choose for me later.

I always buy GS cookies. Usually Thin Mints, but this year I still had some in the freezer (I'd stocked up) and I bought their new peanut butter patties. So gooooood! But 65 calories each....

I went to dinner at a Cambodian restaurant and the owner's kids were selling cookies. I bought a box of Samoas (actually called samoas, not caramel delights). So good. I really need to figure out how to make these at home for the lean times.....

OK, now I'm feeling twice as righteous. I bought some to send to the troops the other day ...

Girl Scouts and Girl Scout cookies are great. This, perhaps not so great.

I'm glad I'm donating. I can't eat the cookies, but I will give the girls a chance to ask for my help, and if they ask, I'll give what I have available.

(I figure that the point of this is to help teach girls to ask for things. And that's a potent life skill - unless one happens to be the big boss, one is constantly having to learn to ask people for things they may or may not want to give. Practicing that is a good thing.)

It's interesting: Planned Parenthood is officially demonized. You don't even need to give a reason; just mention the name. In a just world this would bite them in the balls - because it bit them so hard in the ass that it went clean through... okay, that joke requires too much explanation, never mind.

Oddly, here in the UK it's the scouts who are more open minded and liberal (to the extent of opening up to both genders) and the guides (our equivalent of your girl scouts) who are terribly conservative. They don't sell biscuits either!

Actually.....

As a GS lifetime member, and as a person who believes in all of those things the ad states, but knows better I want to say: The GS does not support those things. The GS is neutral on most everything in that ad, except transgendered kids. The GS will accept any child who identifies as a girl.

http://www.girlscouts.org/program/gs_central/mpmf/faqs.asp

For people like you and me Ny, those things make us buy MORE cookies.. but there are lots of people in the past few years who are actively boycotting cookies AND TELLING THE GIRLS IT IS THEIR FAULT. The GS org is a non-political org and they refuse to make a big fuss about it besides putting FAQs on their websites. But in general they do not support PP nor do they support pro-abortion/pro-choice.

It is hurting the girls in lots of ways. But I wanted to tell you the facts b'c while I feel that GS is a great org, they don't do the things the left says they are doing. The things I think GS does: exposes girls to ideas and thinking they wouldn't normally see or hear outside the home, gives the girls critical thinking skills, promotes social justice, and actively engages girls to problem solve about problems in their own home/neighborhood/area/city/state/etc.

WIthout GS in my life I wouldn't be the person I am today, and I like that person. And I think that tearing down access for girls to have good access to decision making skills is only hurting the girls.

I'm really glad you pointed this out, bright eyes: in my amused rush to say "As if these things are BAD" I forgot to talk about what is and isn't official GS policy. Again, I need a single word for "this isn't true and it wouldn't be bad if it were".

Under it all, though, the people horrified at the Girl Scouts hate that it teaches girls that we are full sentient humans, so.

yeah. that is exactly what the people who think this way hate: teaching girls to be problem solvers and full sentient beings. The can't stand that problem solving leads to understanding the world and working on problems from the grass roots up. ARGH.

I hope you didn't feel I was getting on a soapbox. But I keep seeing these references to GS being tied to orgs they aren't tied to and you have to nip it in the bud when you see it.

Wanna hear something really sad? My mother was once a program director for our council. She now believes all of these lies. Even tho when she worked for them she knew they didn't do any of these things. I lit into her like my head was on fire I was so mad. SHE HELPED GIRLS and now she thinks that she was part of some evil plan. WTH???
