A Heroine of the World
Apr. 10th, 2007 08:23 amSo, I made my groggy way to work today, reading the paper as I went. I found an article in it, an interview with a woman named Lydia Cacho Ribeiro. Ms. Cacho is a journalist and activist in Mexico who has done great work and endured terrible trials. She's founded the Centro Integral de Atencion a las Mujeres (Refuge Center for Abused Women) and the Center for Women's Assistance in Cancun, and wrote a book called The Demons of Eden: The Power Behind Child Pornography connecting prominent Mexican politicians and businessmen to a child pornography ring. She's been raped, arrested, beaten in police custody, all in efforts to silence and punish her, but she refuses to be silenced, refuses to give up.
I'm beyond impressed with her, needless to say, and I wanted to make a note of her. I'll have to see how I can help. And, reading about her reminds me to see what I can do to help women generally. The photo on the front page of the paper was of a bruised, frightened-looking woman being arraigned on charges of killing her husband, and the accompanying article explained that she says he abused her. These are global issues, as that juxtaposition reminds me, global and intensely personal.
