These are two of the things I did today:

1) planet.note.BASE.IMAGE

2) note.draft.base

This is rather the intended final result, but with more colors in the rings (E chose the colors and J dubbed it 'Planet Song').

planet.note.BLUE

(For awhile I've been meaning to redraw this image, which Paul C. found online a very long time ago, and give it to whatever filkers like it. My only remaining copy is a battered teeshirt, so I figured it was time to try making it.)

Hence, a poll!

As always, I hope you will do whatever will give you joy, but I ventured some opinions anyway. :)

Hey, I asked for a reason. :D

i really like it! and i am only a filker in the most peripheral sense.

what i would love though is a modification of an actual photo of saturn though :)

That would take Photoshop. Hopefully someone with Photoshop will read this and be intrigued...

(And, thank you. :)

I do not know if this appeals to you, but free programs exist that do a lot of what Photoshop and Illustrator do:

http://www.gimp.org/
http://inkscape.org/

Since my most recent laptop crash, I am starting to learn both of these, to reduce my dependence on Adobe products. (I can quit any time I want to :> )

*I* like it-- a lot-- but I haven't the foggiest what "filkers in general" will like. The sound waves/planetary rings visual pun is the coolest thing I've seen all week. I voted for black note/rainbow rings, just for pretty, but maybe a monochromatic (see what I did there?) version better preserves that pun.

That visual pun is part of why this image has so resonated with me. :)

I know not about the opinions of filkers, nor do I particularly care. I strongly prefer 2, but so far am tragically in the minority.

Mas cool. I like both versions, and think they'll afford the opportunity to play with them (they should be easy enough to segment digitally so that you can really apply all sorts of colors). You could even do a version without the eighth-note flag, and it work well, I think.

Some filkers will like it, some will not, and some won't care. Unless you're thinking of running it up the Cafepress flag to see if it will increase your income tax, does it matter?

From: [identity profile] browngirl.livejournal.com
Part of the reason I like the flag is that is unambigiously indicates that this is MUSIC not some sort of weird lollipop. :)

Well, I have found myself out of step with Greater Filkdom before, so I would rather not get flamed, and at least if I do I would rather know in my heart I didn't deserve to be. :)

For this? Anyone flaming would be, at the least, an inconsiderate putz. I could see someone disliking it, and "it's not to my taste" is different from "it sucks" (the latter of which is unwarranted).

I am a filker, and I am amused. It's nice to see a note ring out like that. It reminds my of my brother's musical note/dandelion seed visual pun, which he had fun making buttons with.

Graphically, I kind of want the head of the note and its rings to match the proportions of Saturn, and the tail to be just long enough to get the idea across that it's a note. The first one is the better match to that ideal.

Saturn is flattened at the poles, and thus should be a bit elliptical (close to 10% wider than it is high), and the best Saturn photos show a bit of a rakish tilt. This is fortulate, because musical notes are generally printed with tilted elliptical heads, though I suspect that the tilt of the standard note head is opposite the ideal tilt for this graphic. (Musical note heads tilt down to the left and up to the right, but with the tail on the right, the planet might look better tilted up to the left and down to the right.

Long ago, my publishing business was called Saturn Press, and my logo was a Saturn I rocket in front of the planet Saturn, and I spent a great deal of effort making the planet correctly proportioned (The rocket was exactly proportioned as well), even though it doesn't really matter, if your aesthetic is calibrated by the real planet, it looks significantly better if it matches Saturn.

If I were still running Saturn Press, and were add music to the product line, I would totally steal your idea for a logo!

*takes notes* Thank you for reminding me of Saturn's proporproportions. I have flattened #1 a bit, but I'm leaving 2 round. So one will be Saturn and the other will be generically ringed.

I would say more but J is telling me all about Legos. ANd the idea's not even mine so swipe away!
