I had a really lovely day with WD today. He took me into the sunshine, on necessary errands, to dinner with WG, and to see STID.

... I kind of wish I'd seen it in five minute Youtube chunks. There were so many moments of awesomeness studded into a matrix of nonsensical plot and stupid character decisions, it was like a chocolate chip cookie made of gourmet chips and mud for the batter.

I did entertain WD and WG with my post-movie ranting, though.

*giggles* These were definitely good features of the movie; I spent a lot of it thinking about how pretty they all are.

But I have an analytical side, and she was armwavy.

It was the most extraordinary paradigm of a Parson's Egg I've ever seen, frankly. I am still pondering going to see it again just for the brief shining flashes of awesome...

What is a Parson's Egg?

(OMG HIS SRS FACE)
(PS It is my headcanon that when Chekov went charging back onto the Bridge he kissed Sulu before he sat down.)

Well, according to this it's a Curate's Egg and it means something that's basically rotten but you pretend it's not...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curate's_egg

(I have to admit I use it to mean a pile of turd with a few diamonds hidden in it - they're diamonds, but they're not exactly as sparkly or appealing as they should be in their current location, which that article suggests is not quite the correct usage)

(or rather, a chocolate chip cookie with mud for the batter - a much better description!!)

Ditto, as to usage. Many things I have to get the diamonds out of by intense searching are fundamentally rotten, but it's not inherently what I mean by it. Just that I have to do a lot of sifting.

sounds like excellent fodder for fandom, tho?

I still haven't seen it and a friend is curious about the effect of the new movie on shipping--you mentioned something about a K/S/U and McKirk timeshare?

AUUUUGH honey there is a special warning for you -- it's going to look for a brief shining moment like it might be setting up Rambleverse but it's not auuugh.

It was however much with the shippy. The moments of Kirk/Uhura were especially dear to me, and there were bucketloads of K/S and a K/S/U relationship discussion (and shortly thereafter the three of them huddled tightly together in a corner, mmm yum) and adorable K/Mc and Bones getting his flirt on. So there was that. (I am so writing that timeshare.)

I KNOW I ACCIDENTALLY GOT SPOILED FOR THAT and i'm very glad i did bc it's not something i'd like to be blindsided with D:

eeeeeeeeee that sounds SUPER GREAT? and the huddling, i think i saw that in one of the promo pics that was going around months ago and i'm glad it's exactly what i thought it was. ^u^

i'm gonna privately c&p this for my friend to ease her worries, if that's okay?

i think i'm gonna make myself an appointment to see STXII this week.

(I'M GLAD YOU'RE WRITING THAT TIMESHARE)
(I'VE MISSED YOU)

Yeah, I think I'm glad I got spoiled too or I would have been loudly upset.

That picture was exactly what you thought it was and immediately preceded by Spock and Uhura bodily picking Kirk up and hauling him back with them.

I have missed you, too. :) I won't be able to be around as I have been, but O I have missed this.

Since I'd gone to see it after reading spoilers, I was able to be prepared for the Terrible Stupid Of Space, and enjoy the character moments even when they were at TERRIBLE TIMES AND PLACES oh my gosh that relationship discussion.

Um, where was I?

Oh, right. Anyway, so definitely, Curate's Egg to the max.

I think I somehow didn't believe the io9 piece as much as I should have, or something.

I should not have enjoyed that relationship discussion because OMG, Jim's little "You're really going to do this now?" but I did because OMG all of them.

Also, what's a Curate's Egg?

The parson's family had the curate to tea.

Mrs. Parson enquired, "How is your egg?"

The cautious curate replied, "Some parts are excellent."

Well, io9 did also say that Trek had previously always tried to make the science believable, which made me gesticulate at the screen and say "What!?" a lot. But most of their other criticisms were spot on, yes.

(And, once I got over the fact that they were having that discussion where/when they were having it, well -- it was a great scene.)

The rest of it-- well, the fact that everyone spends So Much effort in order to bring Khan back for trial, and then they Khansicle him without (AFAIK) a trial, is basically a microcosm of all the rest of the logic and plot holes wandering around

Amaebi has explained Curate/Parson's Egg for me; sorry, I assume everyone knows my not-pop-culture references.

No, no, it was a good metaphor, used independently by several others in describing this movie, so I was wondering.

(And I agree so much.)

wow, PERFECT description.

i'd been warned that it was a stupid movie, so i went with a bunch of friends for company and got a giant frappe, and kind of leaned back and watched it with a five-minute attention span :)

You know, I think one of my favourite things about this movie is how all over the place the reactions are - though it does make it hared to decide if I want to watch it soon or if I'm okay with waiting a bit longer. For what it's worth, I'm sorry the batter wasn't more delicious.

And this is completely OT, but I've been trying to reply to the comment you left in my post since yesterday and LJ won't let me (I apologize in advance if at some point you get two dozen replies at once). So I will just say here that I honestly can't recommend Orphan Black enough and that if you ever do decide to watch it, I hope you enjoy it. :)

Heh. I honestly don't know how to advise you. I bet the K/S fans adored it -- it was like a feature length K/S fanvid.

It rather was the first thing that popped into my head when you wrote STID instead of any of the other ways you could have written it, including the whole name with or without punctuation or the abbreviation (uppercase or lowercase) with punctuation.

If they come out with reboot Star Trek: Interstellar Genesis, if you abbreviated it STIG I would have said something about Top Gear. I go with what I got.

No. No, I couldn't resist.

I thought it was a palimpsest's palimpsest, and that that wasn't a bad structuring decision-- though I wondered how accessible the movie would be to peopl with little or no ST history or association. (It also seemed to me that the 3D version would be a vomit comet.)

*giggle* LOVE your analogy! And trust you to come up with one that has a baking theme. :-)

If you ever feel like posting your rant, I'd love to read it. I loved the movie and hated the movie. It was fun, and it was terrible. It was awful, and I want to see it again. Not that I'm ambivalent or anything. :-)

P. S. -- Where is it that you do most of your Star Trek discussions, and do you do them under any names I would recognize?

On my [livejournal.com profile] rubynye journal, I'd say. I have a Star Trek category in Memories and all the stories are tagged.

I don't even remember my rant now, just waving my arms a lot.
