For a rainy groggy Friday.

5 year old Bob absolutely rocked his Daphne costume for Hallowe'en this year. His mom wrote a fierce blog post about her dedication to letting him be who he wants to be, not what preconceived notions people might impose on him. About half the comments are supportive, which is a remarkably high percentage considering.

[livejournal.com profile] blcwriter sent me this beautiful poem: I Wish I Had More Sisters. It really gripped my heart with that sweet pain of recognition, and I pass it on for all my siblings of mind and heart.

Bishop John Shelby Spong "will no longer engage the biblical ignorance that emanates from so many right-wing Christians about how the Bible condemns homosexuality, as if that point of view still has any credibility. " I've been meaning to post this for awhile -- if you've heard my witterings about my evangelical Christian upbringing you know what a statement like this means to me, and if you haven't, just know that I heartily, heartily approve.

And now, on to my day.

Thank you for those links. I'm going to pass the Spong one on next time. Do you want to be credited for pointing me to it?

Not particularly, as I got it from several friends. Thank you for asking, though. :)

The time has come for politicians to stop hiding behind unjust laws that they themselves helped to enact, and to abandon that convenient shield of demanding a vote on the rights of full citizenship because they do not understand the difference between a constitutional democracy, which this nation has, and a "mobocracy," which this nation rejected when it adopted its constitution.

(Oh, this speaks to my very heart. Thank you, hun ♥)

Too bad the mom of the story kind of spoiled it by posting 'my son is gay' at the top, cross dressing is not always related to sexual preference.

And the first paragraph of text is
"Or he’s not. I don’t care. He is still my son. And he is 5. And I am his mother. And if you have a problem with anything mentioned above, I don’t want to know you."

why bring in the stereotype of gay men being into cross dressing in the first place? It is beside the point.

because the whole point of the article was that people looked aghast at her crossdressing son due to the whole 'omg gay' thing.

The point is, in trying to rebut the stereotype, you don't reinforce it, her choice of header was ill-advised.

I think it was designed to grab eyes right now, when gay minors committing suicide is such a hot issue. I see the objection, and "but it totes could mean he's straight!" is a dilution of her message.

Thanks for posting these links -- each of the 3 held some spark of empathy and optimism, something I personally felt a need for this week.

As a longtime Episcopalian, I was especially glad to read the statement by Bishop Spong -- I attend an inclusive parish, so I could relate to this.

Those are all awesome. Bob did rock his costume! And Bishop Spong super, super rocks with his nonengagement.
