Halloween is on Sunday this year, so I thought I'd ask your thoughts on logistics.

I'm giving out candy October 31. If there are people who have a problem with Halloween being on a Sunday because it's not Christian enough, they need to fucking stop celebrating it altogether because it's not Christian enough on any day.

Um, yes. Given that Halloween (as opposed to Samhain or anything else) is a specifically Christian festival (the eve of All Saints), Sunday is an ideal time for it, I'd say. Those who say it's not Christian enough don't know their own religion.

Welp, here's where it starts getting complex. Many Protestants (Especially those with heavy Calvinist roots such as the Baptist derivatives) don't recognize saints or celebrate their days. Obviously I was reared in one of those denominations and was speaking from that view, as I did not take All Saints Day into account mentally at all. (In fact, many people I went to church with as a youngster considered Catholicism just this side of Paganism).

Heh. Interesting. Funny how our rearing pops out in odd ways.

Apparently the Chamber of Commerce Business trick-or-treating is happening Friday, so we *might* get kids but it's unlikely.

Unicef Trick-or-Treating is happening Sunday. I can't find anything official from the public schools.

I wouldn't do candy any day other than Halloween, myself. But then, I don't celebrate it at all, so there you go.

In our town, there is always a designated trick or treating day/time period, and we go with that. Absent that, though, I'd have the candy anyway by Saturday, so if I got the odd trick or treater, I'd probably answer the door, but mainly expect it on Sunday.

Buy candy only if you or someone else is planning to be home. :-)

This business of official trick-or-treating date/time is utterly foreign to me. Trick-or-treating happens the evening of October 31st starting at dusk, and any other arrangement is Just Wrong. :-)

I agree with that, bought lots of candy last year, but we were out with the kids most of the night, (no one to stay home and hand out) so by the time we came home, most of the trick or treaters were done, so then you are desperately looking for teenagers, and hopefully you bought candy you'd eat anyway.

I continue to be completely confused by the concept of expecting people to TorT on not-Halloween. Every year, someone asks on DSLJ what day trick or treating will be. Just weird.

I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] ceo and [livejournal.com profile] surreakestate. Halloween is the 31st, not the 29th or the 30th. This business of having other nights for ToT is for the birds... We will not be home on Friday or Saturday.

My neighborhood has always gotten tons of kids (upwards of 100+), this year I have not clue as to whether my T will be going out in our home neighborhood or not, but *someone* needs to be home for the kids who come ring our doorbell.

I would do a quick check to see if your town has an official time, but otherwise, the 31st it is!

Apparently businesses are welcoming trick-or-treaters 3PM-5PM Friday. But we'll still get them on Sunday. :)

I think Foxborough's moved it to Saturday because they don't want the kids running around in the football game traffic, but other than that...

It doesn't make sense to me to have it any day but Halloween, really. And I wish they'd move daylight savings time back again! The whole point of it is going out in the dark!

I've lived here ten years and never had a trick-or-treater. But there is always that first time and what better excuse to buy a ton of candy?

We won't be buying lollies or giving out lollies on any day, and we'll grumble loudly about the American influence if any costumed kiddies come knocking on the door. It wasn't done in my day, there's no community aspect to it here, it's just an imported celebration of silliness designed to sell poorly-made dress-up outfits and sweet things. *shrugs*

Buy candy if you want. Or little toys, if you want. I mean, I love trick-or-treating, but... don't feel obliged if you don't want to. And I've taken to buying little toys instead of candy. Partially that's because we actually get very few trick-or-treaters given where our house is, and toys don't go bad from year to year. Besides, I like having little things if bubbles around.

Little toys! What an awesome idea, and I know just where to get them, too! But it's too late now.

Next year, next year.

I don't know when y'all will get trick-or-treaters, but I'm not handing out one piece of candy till Sunday, 'cause that's the *day* and I'm a grumpy old thing.

I'm hoping I'll be better so I can go out with Jeff, Sam & Charlie, but if I have to stop every few yards to hack up a lung, it might not be the best experience. Though, instead of Sir Not Appearing in This Film (with kitty ears), I can tell people I'm Camille (with kitty ears). And watch while they try to puzzle that out. ;)

I'm also a cynical old thing.

Love you.
