"This can be a quick one. Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes."

This is not always a recommendation:

The King James Bible
Guns, Germs & Steel by Jared Diamond
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
Minoans: Life in Bronze Age Crete by Rodney Castleden
The Mask of Apollo by Mary Renault
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlen
Friday (aughgh) by Robert Heinlein
North of Boston by Robert Frost
Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold
Cookwise by Shirley Corriher
The Economy of Cities by Jane Jacobs
The Souls of Black Folk by WEB DuBois
The Frugal Gourmet Keeps the Feast by Jeff Smith
Always Coming Home by Ursula K. LeGuin
Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin

I've thought about trying this one, but I'm hampered by the fact that I have always had trouble remembering titles--especially if they aren't really closely related to the content of the book.

Well, dang. I can't think of a fix for that.

*laughs delightedly*

I should ask you for General Audience Math Book Recs -- it's silly, but being a fan of a certain show involving math has really piqued my interest.

what sort of books? recreational maths? mathematical concepts explained? (perelman's book really was *perfect* in both respects, i mourn its passing :(). have a look at ian stewart's "nature's numbers", that one's great.

#8... please tell me more?

The Wedded Wife (http://www.amazon.com/Wedded-Wife-Lesbian-Life-Transformation/dp/0895947668/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240847058&sr=8-1) one? Like, how I came to read it, etc.?

I've probably told you that I was the minister's wife in a fundamentalist religion in a tiny village. I was convinced I had never met a lesbian, and here I was realizing I was one. Anyway, I didn't read it until I had come out and left him and the religion, but it was so liberating to read these stories of ordinary married women who came out and were ordinary lesbians living fabulously ordinary lives.

We have no overlaps, although if I were making a longer list The Mask of Apollo would be on it. It's my 3rd favorite MR book.

Friday (aughgh) by Robert Heinlein

Now I want an edition of the book that says "Friday (aughgh)" on the cover. Because, yeah.

Friday retains its distinction as the only book that I've thrown against the wall, then picked up and continued reading, which I was reading for fun. (The others, such as The Bell Curve and eugenics texts, were for class.) It's so vastly problematic, but parts of it keep echoing in my soul.

And I could have filled out half this meme with Renaults; I love every one of her Ancient Greek books except Funeral Games, which I merely like a lot.

Yes, pretty much that was going to be my comment.

The thing is… It has some worthwhile bits. Which is why so much Aauaghhhasdh comes in, I suspect.
