"You can't take the sky from me..."

At its best, as at its worst, watching movies in theaters can be a communal experience. It's funny how much I like communal experiences; I suppose my childhood in a charismatic kind of religion gave me a taste for that feeling of being united with and transported alongside the people around me. I went to see Serenity for the second time. The first time I went with my WD and sat in a theater with two or three other people; it felt like we had the place to ourselves. This time I went with my bouncy friend
maelithil and we sat in a full theater (*wave* to
eudociainboston; we didn't find you, but we were still there by your invite, so thank you). The audience laughed and cried and gasped almost like one person with many voices, most dramatically when [Big Damn Spoiler] turned that laughter into gasping in an eyeblink. It was wonderful to watch the movie with just WD; it was also wonderful to watch it clinging to S's hand in the middle of a theater full of friends.
Which is fitting, for a movie that is (among other things) about a community, and based on a show with a strong, faithful fan community whose patience has been rewarded. It's pretty geeky to be so transported over a movie, but I've never been cool yet, why start now?
"Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand...."
