His sniper instincts are honed sharp and every noise makes his body tense before he can force it to relax again. He lies in the dark, waiting, listening, falling drowsily halfway into sleep until a quiet huff of breath wakes him again. He's starting to feel sick with lack of sleep, his mind simultaneously hyper-alert and dulled, but he pushes it aside and gives in, sitting up silently and creeping across the room.
Inside the crib, his daughter is sleeping peacefully. Her tiny hands are curled at her side, her lips slightly pursed with sleep-sighs. He watches her, memorizing her sleep, and feels his body finally go calm.
