Queen of Heaven and Earth

Guenevere lit her candle and added it to the others. The lights swam in her blurred vision, an ocean of light before the sad, serene face of the Lady of the Waters.

"Hail Mary, full of grace - " Guenevere choked on a sob. The cramping in her belly mocked her, one more proof that she, at least, was not blessed among women. At this moment, in the solitude of the chapel, Arthur's queen found it in herself to admit that she did not know if her tears stemmed more from disappointment or relief.

"Oh, Mary. I am not...would not be a good mother. I, who have everything to offer a child, I...I could never be like you, who raised the Son of God in poverty. I am selfish, Mary. I do not...I do not want to carry children. I do not want to tend them and care for them...and lose them."

"How did you bear it? How did you stand it? I..." Kneeling on the stone floor of the chapel, Guenevere wept. After a few moments, she took a deep breath, and stood.

"Holy Mary, Mother of God, I ask you to grant my husband a child, an heir to his kingdom. Amen."
