Title: Can't Take The Sky [From Me]
Rating: As it is: N/A As it was intended to be: PG-13, maybe R
Characters/Pairing/Threesome/Etc: Winona Kirk; Jim/OC, Jim/Bones
Content Advisory: Violence, angst, character death.
Summary: How Winona Kirk saved half the colonists of Tarsus IV.
Prompt/Plotbunny: Explaining where Winona wasn't by the events of the movie.
Notes: I wanted to write this to prove that Tarsus IV stories don't have to insult Winona Kirk, to explain why she's not in the main body of the movie, to put Jim on Tarsus IV because I thought it makes an interesting backstory for him, and to give Winona an adventure. However, I couldn't see her surviving the plot, and people whose opinions I respect said if I killed her I would be 'fridging her, so I ended up not writing this.

Winona looks at the Car Incident (and Sam's
simultaneous Running Away Incident) and says, "You know what? My sons
need to live with me right now. Reassign me to the colony on Tarsus IV
where I can both work for Starfleet and live with them." Three years
later, after not being heard when she said to her higher-ups, "Things are
going terrible places here," and while helping to organize the resistance
to Gov. Kodos and trying to get her sons back off the colony, she's
killed, [maybe along with Sam.]
I'm looking at that backwards and forwards, and I don't see how it
denigrates Winona, except that she could be seen as being 'fridged. But
it could be changed to How Winona Kirk Helped Save 5000 Colonists, too.
Characters: Winona, Jim, Sam, Jim's boyfriend-or-girlfriend (abbreviated as Jim's Sweetie), the Rileys, Kodos, Kodos's assistant, Hoshi Sato.
Story starts with Winona happily surveying her son or sons, thriving on Tarsus. Jim being melodramatic about a boy/girl who dumped him. Neighbor Hoshi Sato, neighbor Riley family. Worrisome crop blight.
Food shortages.
So-and-so offscreen character disappears.
Winona worries, is told Starfleet's been informed so she doesn't need to send reports. She packs backpacks of supplies for her son/s in a sleepless night. She disconnects her padd from the colony intranet and writes reports.
Winona talks to Kodos's assistant, figures out Starfleet is not being informed of true situation (Kodos wants to appear in control).
Many people disappear.
Winona is shouted down when she suggests calling for help.
Hoshi Sato kills herself as an act of protest (cf Yeomanrand's story Funshi)
Sam disappears, Jim's sweetie's family disappears; same day, rhe Rileys have been ordered to report to the Community Center. They bring Kev by and ask Jim to 'babysit' him. Jim promises Mr. Riley he'll take care of Kev. Winona gives Jim a backpack and tells him to go to the forested hills. [Jim says "I need to get my sweetie," Winona kisses his forehead, tells him to use back door of house, goes to detention center to rescue Sam/her protege.]
[Jim, with Kev, goes to his sweetie's house in time to see the family being dragged out and his sweetie shot to cow the rest. Because he's in the trees behind the house the soldiers/security forces/whatever they're called don't see him and Kev, so they get away.]
Winona rescues Sam, blows up part of armory as distraction/limiting resources, breaks into the room where she can send a message to Starfleet. [Sam insists on staying with her, helps her subdue soldiers on way] [or she makes Sam leave]. They send the message, she tells Sam she's proud of him/her, [if Sam -- reminds her of George], puts him in a Jeffries tube (say 'even dirtside installations have Jeffries tubes) and tells him to run, stands and waits for them to break down the door. Last line "They come in shooting."
Epilogue: Jim in bed with Bones, telling him about at least some of this.

Oh, this is an epic, epic prompt.
From here, you can:

In a nutshell: this is what I think too.
If I ever decide to write a Story of Angst, I might write teenage Jim's
first romance on Tarsus IV. In my intended story, his sweetheart doesn't
make it.
