Oh, Emma, this is an *incredible* comment! Thank you! (And I hope you got some rest since!)
I really liked the complexity of Charlie's two relationships and that he seems to feel it's totally okay to have both of them fully. That's an unusual take on him, since most people write Amita as more of a prop or disposable in favor of Don, but this Charlie is pursuing his relationship with her as if Don didn't exist and that's oddly fascinating. Interesting choice.
Heh. Given the chance, I write about characters with multiple relationships, and the interrelationships of those relationships, a lot. Without getting into too much detail, or telling stories that aren't mine to tell except transmuted into fiction, I've seen some real-life examples, not all of which ended, badly or otherwise. If Don and Charlie weren't brothers I would probably write threesomes for them, but they are, which makes things more difficult and thus even more fascinating.
I really like Amita (and without getting too political, there are some common slash solutions to the 'problem' of a canon het relationship which I don't much care for), so I decided I'd rather posit a Charlie who really is in love with two people than one who is using her as an unknowing beard.
Anyway, enough of my behind-the-scenes babble. This story kind of grew as I wrote it, and I'm really proud of it that it could earn a comment as wonderful as the one you've given me here. :)
