Yay! LJ is back! and a Character Meme!

So, in celebration of LJ being back, I think I'll post a meme.
I ran into this in
thete1's memories, and it's a useful way of procrastinating on writing my stories. ;)
I think I'm not going to try to disentangle where I got these ideas from (canon vs my head vs other's writings vs fanon vs whatever) but just go with it. Also, these are *my* takes on the characters; I read, and enjoy, a lot of takes on them that are not at all similar to mine (and sometimes wish more folks would do so.)
My Frodo,,,,
,,,,is older than the hobbits he chooses to spend his time with. This says something about him. The fact that the Ring kept him looking like a tween made it convenient and prevented possible ridiculousness, but he would have hung out with tweens anyway.
....is often not really aware of his emotions and/or is surprised by them. I got this from
eykar; I don't write the hobbits the way she would have had me do so, but I learned more from what she said about them than she might have thought.
....looked at Sam one day, and realized he was very nearly grown, and felt some things shift in his head. They spent a couple of years having odd incidental conversations about it before they actually did anything about it.
....is a Kinsey 4.5, maybe. Maybe a 5. I thought seriously about the "Frodo never got married because he's gay" bit of fanon, several times, not least during/after discussions with
serai1. I thought about it enough that I'm satisfied that I could write a Kinsey 1 Frodo if I cared to. But I don't.
....loves Rosie in large part for loving Sam, just as Sam and Merry are fond of each other partially because they both love Frodo. Oh, and he knows about that, too.
....likes blonde hair (my Sam was golden-brown-haired even before the movies). Despite this, and he will never tell Gimli or Sam so, thought Arwen was just a little lovelier than Galadriel.
.....wrote the book on being bossy, at least as far as Merry is concerned.
.....has thoughts concerning the Quest that I don't quite have the skill to write yet.
....Spent many nights of the spring and summer of 1421 sitting and watching the stars with Elanor in his arms.
My Sam....
....has to, every time he is in charge, consciously take a deep breath and remind himself that a Big Mistake Has Not Been Made. Every single day of his tenure as Mayor, he did this. Often several times a day. Despite *and* because of this, he really enjoyed being Mayor.
....is not toppy. At all. Except when someone (Frodo) really really really wants him to be. This is a subset of the last statement.
....was grand friends with Bilbo, if not as closely as
rabidsamfan's Sam was. (Mostly due to my inability to write Bilbo.)
....would, if you asked him if he loved Frodo or Rosie better, just (pre-Quest) look at you blankly or (post-Quest) just smile.
....is impressed with Merry and likes him very much and (mostly when they were tweens) had a great deal of hot sex with him. And would never admit to being secretly proud that Frodo chose Hobbiton, and him, over Brandy Hall and Merry.
....regards Pippin mostly as a tall younger relation. Hobbitpiles aside. And even when their children are married and giving them grandchildren.
....could go quite mad over Rosie, and loves her because she always encourages him to be sane and clear of thought. (Among other reasons.)
....is a Kinsey 3 or so.
....has the biggest sense of wonder you've ever seen. But everyone knows that.
....never calls his children by each other's names. Even when their mother sometimes does.
My Merry....
....is bossy. Is organized. Is determined to be as good of a Master of Buckland as his Da is, if not better, and will die happily knowing he succeeded and trained his son as well. More importantly for the sorts of plots I write him in, he's clear-eyed and, though he sees rank and is quite proud in his way, sees quality regardless of rank (or gender. I'm a sucker for his movieverse relationship with Eowyn, I really am.) This will stand him well as Master, when he'll promote some hobbits to positions that might have seemed "above" their rank, but which they fulfil admirably.
....thinks he and Sam are quite similar in their similarities (and of course very different in their differences). Thinks Sam is quite handsome, and likes him both for his sake and for Frodo's, and had a great deal of fun having lots of hot sex with him as a tween. Would've liked to have had Marigold, too, but would never ever take advantage (and knew Sam would have killed him). Admitted to himself long ago that he wishes Frodo had come back to Brandy Hall and leased Bag End, but if that couldn't happen Sam's just about the best hobbit he could have thought of to have looked after Frodo.
....would be thought of as a horny bugger, if everyone doing the judging didn't also know Pippin. Always had a lot of kissing friends, and after some good advice from Frodo (later passed on to Pippin) made sure they all knew that it was about fun, not hunting for a wife or a right-hand-hobbit.
....falls hard and fast in love (here used in a broader sense than romantic love). He fell in love with Pippin when they met (you all know who I got that from) and is not quite sane over him, and they both know it. He fell for Boromir, *wham*. And for Eowyn much the same way, actually. With Theoden King he met someone he wanted to follow and serve and dedicate his strength to, and he still sometimes grieves for him.
.....he didn't actually fall for Estella like that. That love grew slow and sure and big, and sometimes still amazes him with its size and strength. The first time he asked her to marry him, before the Quest, she turned him down, not wanting to be mistress of Brandy Hall and not sure she wanted to deal with so much Pippin. After the Quest (after a year without him and thinking he was likely gone forever) she'd changed her mind. It didn't hurt that Pippin had changed in some ways she approved of, either.
....is bossy in bed, but will be subby when the mood takes him or someone he loves (Estella) wants him to be.
...is a Kinsey 3, or maybe 2.5.
....has two or three or four children (I haven't decided yet), all girls but for Theodoc.
My Pippin....
.....is a horny bugger. There was a time when he and Pervinca had a competition....
....just loves. He loved Merry all his life, and Frodo; who else would he go to when he was old enough to start tumbling? He loved Diamond, but didn't actually realize it for awhile, and anyway, they were too young, until they met again after the Quest and weren't too young anymore. And he loved Boromir, and besides Merry loved Boromir, and Pippin actively likes triangles, so.... The closest he came to falling in love like a blow to the head, the way Merry does, is with Faramir.
....expected Denethor to be more like Boromir. Does not expect Faramir to be more like Boromir.
....named his son Faramir because Faramir had named his after Boromir. Was delighted when Faramir's reply letter positively radiated delight and embarassment.
....knows Merry is slightly mad for him, and would never take unscrupulous advantage of it, because he loves him too much.
....is quite willing to take full advantage of his charm with anyone and everyone else. Has been lectured several times about it. Possibly nearly ended up married at pitchforkpoint (I may write that one day). Is secretly pleased that Frodo is a match for that sort of thing, and not just because the challenge gives him reason to practice being devious and to strengthen his charm.
....actually came up with the idea of recruiting Sam as a spy, though Merry's the one who implemented it.
....is slightly crushed out on Sam, for that matter, and on Estella, and on Rosie from when he meets her after the Battle of Bywater.
.....of the three remaining hobbits, has the hardest time believing Frodo and Gandalf are gone.
....is really quite shrewd, and has helped defeat various hobbits' intrigues, and has made Great Smials richer during his tenure.
....is a Kinsey 3.5 or 4, but really just really likes sex. Toppy, bottomy, lads, lasses, whatever, Pippin just likes sex.
....knows Diamond feels guilty about their not having more children. Feels bad about that.
My Rosie....
....is buxom and has large round curls of a dark, rich brown, and grey eyes.
....aspires to hobbitsense (and does better than she often credits herself for).
....thinks Sam was ill-named, and thinks the world of him. And is quite willing to boss him around, because he likes it that way, though she also defers to him when she thinks appropriate.
....thinks the world of Frodo, too. Thought seriously about resenting him for taking Sam away, for owning so much of his love, and realized she neither did nor wanted to.
....is very happy that she doesn't get very sick while pregnant, all things considered.
....has many other qualities, too. I'm not sure why this section isn't longer.
My Diamond....
....has long auburn wavy hair and brown eyes.
....has always been slighly different than her sisters, rather more thoughtful and pensive. Her father took that for flightyness, but it's not.
....carries on correspondences all over the Shire, and ends up doing much or most of Pippin's correspondence as Took and Thain.
.....was kissing-friends with Estella for awhile, and as soon as she heard of Rosemary's death (around mid-November) left to go visit her. Despite that, didn't manage to actually cross paths with Pippin again till the spring of the next year.
....calmly bosses Pippin, and they both love it.
....had a long talk with Merry about their places in Pippin's life, and often, but not always, defers to him.
....like Estella, would have rather had her husband without the huge smial and responsibilities that came with him; unlike Estella, let Pimpernel and Pervinca step into their mother's shoes, and spends her time raising Faramir, doing Pippin's correspondence, and overseeing the summer jamming. (She's really good at jamming.)
....found an unexpected friend in Sam; they can talk for hours and hours.
My Estella...
....has dark brown hair with red highlights, serpent-curled, and hazel eyes. And is plump (I never realized she was supposed to be skinny, according to fanon. Besides, I like the idea of her and Merry being an exclamation-point couple).
....thought she'd marry someone who'd move to Budgeford, and she'd share management of it with Rosemary. Instead she left it, and doesn't always get along with the wife Freddy ends up taking. She tries not to compare her to Rosemary, but....
....tried not to love Merry, whom she'd fought with extensively as a child. Failed.
....goes cold when she gets really angry.
.....once she resigned herself to being Mistress of Brandy Hall, she quite deliberately apprenticed herself to Esmeralda and learned all she could. She often talks shop with Pimpernel over it.
.....had a long talk with Pippin about their places in Merry's life, and does not always defer to him, but will when she thinks it's needful.
My Pervinca....
....looks much like my Pippin, with the pointy nose and chin, the freckles and green eyes and irresistability.
....is much more like Pippin than their elder sisters; the Took Adventurousness showed up in them both. Unlike Pippin, she finds hers very stymied. She's never been even to Bree; the one time she was able to plan a trip she fell ill. One of the great delights of her life was visiting the rebuilt Annuminas (as the hobbits call it, Norbury).
....differs from Pippin largely in that frustration and in having turned the same quality that in Pippin became shrewdness into outright deviousness. Pippin is quite glad his intrigue-generating sister is on his side, or at least, on the side of the Tooks. As a subset of this, when she looks submissive, she's really just being devious.
....is jealous of Pippin, and loves him dearly, since when they weren't fighting they could understand each other (though when they were they sometimes used that understanding as ammunition).
....is envious of and something slightly milder than in love with the open, sweet, married-to-someone-she-loves Rosie.
....is not really happy, but she gets by.
