Fandom Thoughts

browngirlInsomniacally, I have roamed the internet until I found an odd solution to a dilemma. I guess, in a way I owe some thanks to the fellow fans who implicitly called me a racist
I guess technically it would be internalized racist? Anyway, in a post whose link I deliberately didn't save, their logic went that Team Cap was racist (and Sam was authorially-brainwashed and suborned) becuase some number of African countries signed the Sokovia Accords, so [agreeing with] not signing them was tantamount to saying that Captain America et al were allowed to rampage uncontrolledly and colonialistically across African countries.
... okay. [never mind that Steve and Sam, at least, intended to retire, and no African countries seem to have been harmed in the ensuing adventure with Bucky. But anyway.]
At that point I realized that what I've been ingesting about is pretty ridiculous, that maybe I'm not out of touch with the vast majority of fandom. "Fan" is short for "fanatic" after all. There are always going to be people who take it too far but that doesn't necessarily mean everyone does. (There s probably an interesting analysis to be done about how this demonstrates the process of polarization between two sides.)
Anyway, I don't have to be one of those who take it too far. I can and should pull back. A wise friend challenged me that I might have been missing my side's excesses, so I went looking for them. I actually found a cute post which I considered reblogging, along these lines:
Person A: I'm Team Cap
Person B: I know! Stark is pure evil.
Person A: FIGHT ME.
I think that's probably where most Team Cap people are, and I'd like to hope that most Team Iron people feel the same about Steve (and Sam). The movie was meant to be about a clash of two good but opposed sides, not about deciding which hero is actually really a villain.
ANYWAY. Yuletide is coming up, and I am going to enjoy it. I get to write for something I love, and if I have time/opportunity I'll write for a couple of other fandoms as treats. Also I have returned to a corner of fandom I reliably enjoy, and shall wallow there. ANd even though I'm not doing fruitcakes this year I have food projects and art to do.
Time to work at being happy and to refrain from going after unhappymaking things.
