In case you want to try again:
hitting Ctrl-L to bring up the Layer dialog box and using the opacity slider seems to be the easiest way: http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/2422/make-image-partially-transparent-in-gimp
seems to be the easiest way.

The harder way seems to be using layer masks and adding alpha channel adjustments: https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Layer_Masks/

Also, if you're using GIMP because you're on Linux, both MyPaint and Krita are far more user-friendly programs for art purposes. :)
