Last night's class was informative. Any visions of an easy summer class were quite blown away; we're going to be doing 6 hours of class a week, plus homework. This is going to be very different than the drawing I do for fun, and I'm going to have to be as disciplined about not assuming I know without being taught as I would be if I were going to, say, cooking school.

Between class and my next Summer Project at work (sorting out the files so that hopefully they make some sense) I'm going to be busy and distant for the next few days (if not next few weeks), and likely will not be keeping up with LJ. If there's something I should know, let me know.

Whee. :)

Tigerlily showed me this cute pillow bearing truth, sold through the site http://www.gearthatgives.com/ ,which reminded me of my plan to collect worthy charities with gift shops for my Holiday shopping this year and in the future.

I can't remember where I found this, alas (if it was in your journal, forgive me for forgetting) but I find it really interesting: http://blog.dcthornton.com/archives/001156.php

As an immigrant, I agree with much of it; the pressures to necessarily assimilate into *Black* America (aka 'keeping it real', feh) and to do the "nobody likes me, everyone hates me, I'm not going to try" bit are offputting and unnecessary, even counterproductive. On the other hand, though, I'm also a Black woman in the US, and that does affect my life here; some parts of my life would have been different if my family had been Irish or Chinese. (Not necessarily better, different.)

So, I thought I'd put this out here.

For a busy woman I'm posting a lot today. *laugh at myself*
