When I sang Deck The Halls in school choir (we did a big Christmas in June thing) our setting said 'See the blazing bowl before us,' and I assumed it meant a pipe.
Then, later on, I started listening to Muppet Christmas songs, and they sing 'See the blazing Yule before us,' which I can only make sense of as a Yule log. And I wondered which version was the original and how far back it changed.
Now I'm sure(r) that the version I sang was right (well, that and it was OUP's Carols for Choirs, and they're unlikely to make shit up.) It's a bowl of blazing wine!
