Two Opportunities For Good Deeds

From
hammercock: Nicholas Kristof's column about Mukhtar Mai. Mukhtar Mai, also known as Mukhtaran Bibi is a heroine who helps and shelters women from violence in Pakistan, and that's a really inadequate summary of all she does. She can use our help, needless to say, not just money but also volunteers and books. I'm going to go look over my library in a moment.
But first, via
kshandra among others: I can't say it better than
wordweaverlynn: It's so easy to go from a position where you're working, paying the mortgage, living comfortably, to a position where you're looking at being homeless. It just takes a layoff combined with another big expense. That's what happened to this family. Could it be a scam? I doubt it -- I've seen
blackperson 'around' LJ, as it were, and don't get the feeling she'd waste all her social capital on pulling a scam. More importantly to me, if I give something and it's a scam, I've lost money but they've lost their reputation. If I don't and it's not and I could have helped? That diminishes my honor. So.
