I for one welcome our new black hole destroyer

A useful link from several places on my F-list: has the Large Hadron Collider destroyed the Earth yet? Keep checking at regular intervals to be certain!

Incidentally, if the LHC does destroy the Earth, here is a description of how that will happen. Read into the comments for some estimates of how long the process might take.

[livejournal.com profile] micheinnz has posted so many other useful links about the LHC that instead of cribbing her list I'll just refer you to her here, here, and here. And [livejournal.com profile] telynor linked to the Large Hadron Rap.

Do we know if they have switched the bugger on yet?

However, they haven't collided beams yet, and they are operating at energies right now that have already been achieved at other colliders.

Awww, why should a few details like scientific accuracy get in the way of an invigorating disaster scenario?

Nifty! I'm hoping that if we do end up with a slow black hole destroyer, someone will start taking those cross-galactic, self-sufficient star cruiser plans more seriously.

Necessity is the mother of invention, after all!

So who do you think is going to star in the movie ;).

[identity profile] browngirl.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Elijah Wood and Morgan Freeman!

Oh, that's lovely.

*checks again*

Phew, still good!

honestly, I think what's going to destroy the Earth are the replies to that post you made yesterday.

I read part of an interview that Cory Doctorow had with someone who worked at CERN about the likelihood of the LHC destroying the planet. To quote:

"Look, it's a 10^-19 chance, and you've got a 10^-11 chance of suddenly evaporating while shaving."

I for one, look forward to suddenly evaporating during my morning shave. :-)

Eeep! Don't spontaneously vanish, it would mess up your whole day!

I love that first link! (Sharing it with coworkers also revealed to me who reads page source. :-) )

*grins at you* Fun, innit?

Woohoo, namecheck!
