Regional Loyalties

So in today's paper was an article about a drifter who allegedly stabbed four people in NYC, three of them tourists. It turns out that he's from the Boston area and is alleged to have gone to NYC deliberately to hurt people.

I wonder what it says about me that I'm torn between being glad he's not a New Yorker and can't be blamed on NYC, and cringing because he's from Boston.

I guess in the end I feel bad for the four stabbing victims, though glad none of them were killed. And maybe a little bad for this disturbed man, depending on how cognizant of right and wrong he is; at this remove I can't know.

Also, meep.

Yeah, regional loyalties evoke weird emotional states.

Your post reminded me of this one where the Globe headline proclaimed "Bay State exodus 2d only to N.Y."

Also, check out the second anecdote here.

Just free-associating based on your post (whoops, time for my meds)...

Don't forget the classic apocryphal Globe headline:

Two Hub Men Die in Blast

New York City Also Destroyed
