Fannish Poetry

It's [nearly the end of] National Poetry Month, so, inspired by this post by [livejournal.com profile] bironic, I thought I'd write a short post about fannish poetry.

Poetry as fan work is a very old tradition: consider 'Homer's Batrachomyomachia', an epic poem about a battle between mice and frogs that parodies the Iliad and was almost certainly not composed by Homer. (Also here in Ancient Greek.)

As for me, I love poetry, but my most poetic fandom has plenty by the author so I didn't think of adding more. I'm glad others thought more imaginatively, such as [livejournal.com profile] tigerbright, who wrote a soliloquy for Boromir that breaks my heart in the best ways. [personal profile] petra writes quite a bit of lovely accomplished fannish poetry in many fantoms, including but not limited to limericks and posts in blank verse.

So that's my post, and now, hopefully, for comments!

There were five fannish poems in this month's LOTR Community Challenge: http://lotr-community.livejournal.com/.

I had two entries--one a form I haven't tried before, a humorous form called a "clerihew" and I did a sonnet about Gandalf. The other three were very nice as well!
