Mini-DVD Meme Rides Again
I was going to stay up till midnight so this would be posted tomorrow, but I'm groggy. Anyway, this is going around, and I thought, why not?
Pick a passage from my stories, up to 500 words, from anything I've written in this journal, and comment to this post with that selection (including a link to the story being excerpted). I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the story, awful puns [perhaps], and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.
Like Petra over at Dreamwidth I reserve the right to lie egregiously about anything over 3 years old. My stories are listed by character (and sometimes topic) here: http://rubynye.livejournal.com/tag/

When I was writing this I realized that I wasn't writing about Hikari, aka female!Sulu. I was writing about Hikaru Sulu having been transporter-transmuted into a body he doesn't feel is his own. That radically shifted everything I was doing in this story.
"All right, I guess this is the moment you've been waiting for," he says, his voice low, and Pavel tries not to look too eager and probably fails.
Pavel is bisexual and... eighteen? Nineteen, here? There is a corner of his soul that's been chanting "BREASTSBREASTSBREASTSBREASTS" since Hikaru stepped off that transporter pad. And Hikaru knows it.
Smirking, Hikaru tilts his head, turning to face Pavel as he unwinds the bandage; his breasts are even lovelier than Pavel had imagined, the very curves sweet mathematics made flesh, the nipples hardly changed but for their widened rosy halos.
... breasts are pretty. *shrugs, grins*
Hikaru stands there, his arms crossed beneath them, wrapped around himself. Eventually Pavel stops feasting his eyes long enough to look up at Hikaru's face, and the unhappiness he sees cuts through him like a cold knife. "Hikaru," Pavel says, holding out his hands, and when Hikaru waves him near he gets up obediently.
However, Pavel loves Hikaru, not his newly-acquired-and-not-really-wished-for breasts. So.
"You can touch them if you want," Hikaru says listlessly, and Pavel knows in this moment he cannot.
I love writing stories about everyone behaving as well as they can, about couples loving and understanding each other, and there still being problems to deal with. That's the side of life I like to depict, so that's what I went for here.
