N.K. Jemisin's Call to Choice

I meant to do a political linkspam, but the tide, it is overwhelming; I want to do each and every one of these important topics cogent justice, and I really don't think I can.

So, for the moment I will refrain. At least, I wanted to put this in my journal.

Not unrelated: Award-winning author, artist, illustrato Ursula Vernon talks about three fave fandoms - birding, gardening, and F/SF - and a few of the ways in which one of them appears to have gone dreadfully wrong.

(Hint: "Lady authors"? Really?!?)

That was an interesting article, and resonates with my personal journey with fandom. I'm into online fandom so much more now because there are, well, women and young people and POC and so on, and we can connect with each other and have each other's backs against those who would tell us to shut up and go away. I no longer have to be the only Black girl in the room, or bang my head against eternal arguments about whether sexism exists.

(It feels a little ironic to see this written by [livejournal.com profile] ursulav after seeing her dismiss concern about the VRA and reproductive rights -- politics are personal-- but I do agree with what she said in this post. Thank you for making sure I saw it.)

She does have her finer moments (http://ursulav.livejournal.com/1538592.html), in addition to that piece of thoughtlessness.

Oh, of that I am certain, and the particular piece you linked to was very heartening to read. I may not get to be in her lifeboat but some others who very much need allies do get to, and that's a good thing.

Jemisin is just fantastic, always. Thank you!

And I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

Speaking of which, and thinking of the postcard you sent me that is taped up to my bookshelf at work, this is my museum calendar picture for today... well, today-that-was-before-midnight.

Oh man, I remember that one! I love Artemesia's storytelling. Thank YOU for delighting me with this, especially on this rainy ucky day.

That is a superb essay. Thank you.

And I just put it on Twitter. And thanked nkjemisin, who doesn't know me from Adam, there.
