On Reproductive Health in the US: Two Links from [livejournal.com profile] supergee

Both to Shakesville. A Personhood Amendment for women complete with Change.org petition for US citizens, and today is the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers, which includes some information I want to paste into my journal.

The National Abortion Federation has kept a record of violence (.pdf), From 1977 to 2011, there have been:

218 arsons and bombings (1 each in 2011)
99 attempted arson or bombing (1 in 2011)
656 bomb threats (1 in 2011 -- 12 in 2010)
191 incidents of assault and battery (3 in 2011)
420 death threats (2 in 2011)
4 kidnappings (none in 2011)
15,062 incidents of hate mail or hate phone calls (365 in 2011)

There are several more categories. NAF also notes:

All numbers represent incidents reported to or obtained by NAF. Actual incidents are likely much higher. Tabulation of trespassing began in 1999 and tabulation of email harassment and hoax devices began in 2002.

1. Incidents recorded are those classified as such by the appropriate law enforcement agency. Incidents that were ruled inconclusive or accidental are not included.

2. Stalking is defined as the persistent following, threatening, and harassing of an abortion provider, staff member, or patient away from the clinic. Tabulation of stalking incidents began in 1993.

3. The "number of arrests" represents the total number of arrests, not the total number of persons arrested. Many blockaders are arrested multiple times.

Not unrelatedly, consider this report from January 2012's Ms. Magazine, "Operation Rescue, an extremist anti-abortion group, has launched a website - abortiondocs.org - which lists the photographs and addresses of abortion providers, as well as maps to find their places of business. The website, which describes itself as the "largest collection of documents on America's abortion cartel," aims to list every abortion provider in the country.".

I feel guilty all over again for ever giving my allowance to Operation Rescue, even though by now I've likely given more money, both numerically and in adjusted value, to Planned Parenthood and Medical Students For Choice. More importantly, I am convinced that these acts of violence and threatened violence are perpetuated not by the fringes of the soi-disant 'pro-life' movement, but issue instead from its heart. They are the fist shaken behind every anti-choice statement, the threat behind every rhetorical claim. For my part, I am as determined to oppose them as I used to be to support them, if not more so.

People who perform abortions are very brave folk.

As are their support staff. *nods*

Thing to me is, people who are like Operation Rescue claim to do what they do to protect life, but that's hardly the motivation, it's a wholesale excuse to strike out at people, it's the flimsiest of excuses because people like this never advocate choices, or concerns for women who do bear children, and the children themselves.

What else can I say, but, amen!

Thank you for posting this.

The OBs I work with perform abortions, nearly always when woman and/or fetus are in very compromised positions (or, in the case of fetuses, already dead or non-viable outside the uterus.) They don't take it lightly at all, but it is absolutely 100% part of the job.

*blush* I had to post it. I feel bad about all the worthwhile things I don't have time to post.

And yes, it is part of the job. I commend every one of them for remembering so.

Hey, thank you for pointing that out to me!
