Good News OTD

Proposition 8 was overturned. To Wolf for telling me and to Janet for this link to the full decision.

From that decision:

Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.

*cheers in agreement*

Now what can I do, as a private citizen, to help keep Proposition 8 from being reinstated?

(I'm sure there are people who would be shocked to see me so delighted by this ruling, since of course Prop 8 Passed Because Black People Are All Homophobic < /sarcasm>, but hopefully that sentence will make them feel heard so no one will leave me a comment to that effect.)

The smackdown in this ruling makes me SO HAPPY that I want to send the judge a box of See's chocolate.

Regarding the "Prop 8 Passed Because Black People Are All Homophobic" meme, I think this link can't be passed around enough: Really, Prop 8's passage was pushed by white people, including Democrats, fearing for TEH CHILDRENS! One suggestion from my FB friends list: donate to Equality California (ECQA), which is fighting to make marriage fairer. Here's their donation page; you can make a recurring, daily, or one-time donation.

I was fist pumping when I heard the news while driving (listening to NPR.)
