LJ Cuts 20 of 28 Employees

Well, that can't be good. And here I am at work, unable to backup my LJ for at least ten hours.

ETA: http://livejournalinc.com/press_releases/20090106.php

LJ's press release about same.

I've seen a follow-up that says it was not that many employees, and that LJ is unlikely to fall down go boom in the next 12 hours. Still, I understand and share your concern -- I've come to depend on LJ the way I used to depend on Usenet.

Oh yeah; I second that - and I know what I'm doing the minute I get home. Hell, I'm debating waking the Beloved up and walking him through the backup.

It's not going to happen in the next ten hours.

However, put that together with the permanent account sale late last year, and... not good.

But definitely not going to happen in the next ten hours. Heck, GJ is still up, and it's been a year since they stopped maintaining.

This is troubling, but I don't think a 10-hour delay is going to hurt. It's not like they defaulted on payments to their ISP or server-hosting facility.

The thing that makes me most sad about this is that my LJ community is likely to fragment, and that's going to be much harder to track.

I just created an account (same username) over at IJ (which, given that it's working and using the LJ framework, is a fair bet for an exodus). And if it turns out to be we go elsewhere, I'll see you there! (ETA: Rats. I'll have to edit this usericon :-)

An intermediary solution suggests itself later in the morning; isn't there a specific person who might help you out with that?

Anyways, in case he doesn't check LJ obsessively compulsively first thing like I do, I pinged him elseways about this entry.

I suggest we wait to see something from a better source than Gawker, which seems to hate LJ and its weird users. Not to say this isn't accurate, but Gawker is not exactly my idea of trustworthy.

I'm in Colorado - my set up to back up LJ is on my computer at home and I can't remember where I got the program from to use it on the laptop. *headdesk*....

I'm on IJ as "griffen", so if we all go poof in a cloud of electronic smoke here, you can find me there.

I'm irritated because LJBook seems not to work anymore. Grrr. It was my favorite backup method, too, and I even donated to keep it running.

Try LJ Archive (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/) as that's the one my friends are all using (and that I used during the Great BreastWars of Two Thousand and Something!

I'm on a Mac; LJArchive won't work on my platform. Thanks, though.

LJBook is working fine for me. As we speak, in fact.

Visit [livejournal.com profile] kightp's journal. She has a link to a less-hysterical piece by someone apparently in the know. And, said less-hysterical piece also offers some other options for backing up one's LJ.

(I obsessively make a new LJBook every 3 months, did the last one over the weekend, so I'm in pretty good shape!)
