Today's Discussion Question

Inspired by several readings recently on the topic of birth control and health insurance, plus about eighteen years of arguing. So, every so often I hear someone say, "pregnancy is not a disease; therefore, health insurance shouldn't cover any/all birth control for women." I've been trying to think of a rational response to this argument, because while kicking a person for making such an asinine and misogynistic statement would be satisfying, it would probably land me in jail and also cannot be done over the Internet.

So far my best arguments, that controlling one's reproduction can be very important for maintaining one's health, that abstinence is not a sensible method of birth control for many people, and that many methods of birth control (such as the Pill) are also used to treat disorders, all seem to fall a little flat. What would be other, possibly better arguments?

(After all, I do need to resist the temptation towards kicking.)
