A gift and a question.

The gift:
princesswitch wrote an extremely nifty and *not* anti-Christian column on the annoyance of certain Evangelists' efforts to proselytize to GLBT people, which has, as a bonus, a really cool reply from another person. I just wanted to share that with you all.
The question: Remember the guy in Ohio whose art gallery I was in? He wants me to draw scenes of sacrifice for August's exhibit. My poor mind is nearly blank; all I can think of is Abraham and Isaac, and I don't want to draw that one. Can anyone give me ideas on scenes of [human] sacrifice from religious writings or history that would work well coming from my pen? Ones featuring women would be a plus (I draw women better than I draw men).

Date: 2003-06-26 10:48 am (UTC)then there's the witch trials, which weren't sacrifice, but...
Let's see...xtians were tossed "to the lions" in ancient rome.
Let us not forget to include Christ on the cross, which once again isn't quite sacrifice, unless you want to say he sacrificed himself because he didn't defend himself. more biblical stuff could be those two women who went into their father's tent to have sex with him to give him a son, don't remember their names, but that's a sacrifice (of virginity?) of sorts.
Literature has King Kong (remember they tied Fay Wraye to the stand outside of the confines of the walled in city?)

Date: 2003-06-26 10:55 am (UTC)So his daughter comes out to greet Dad.
The daughter got a month of time in the mountains to mourn all the things she'd be missing, and then Dad was permitted to sacrifice her. Personally, I think the High Priest of the time needed a thumping, *bad*, but it's a human sacrifice from a historical religious writing.

Date: 2003-06-26 11:21 am (UTC)They would take the warrior to the top of the temple pyramid, rip out his heart and push the body down the stairs. It is unclear what would happen beyond that since the only remains that have been found were the skulls, kept on special racks in a special temple like place.
Also they sacrificed infants because it was thought that their tears would bring rain.
Thanks for the plug!
Anyway, thank you so much for promoting me and my work. I had to keep reminding myself, "My beef is with homophobes who don't respect my humanity and intelligence, **not** Christians!" I see that at least two people came over because of your plug! Cool, and welcome!
When you do that painting, post it, and I'll do the same for you...

Date: 2003-06-26 01:41 pm (UTC)Sacrifices: nothing new to offer, sadly; I thought of the same things others have already suggested (particularly Aztecs, Agamemnon, and Yephta).
