Middle Night Excerpt Meme

I was going to wait on this for... no good reason, really. (If it's not a good reason at 1:35 AM it's not a good reason. The inverse, however, is not true.) Henceforth: Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] emiime, including her addendum.

Tell me about a story I never wrote, (eg, "The one where Chris Pike and Winona Kirk discover they had the same dream about George*.") and I'll write you a snippet from it. ETA my addition: from the rough draft. I contemplated writing these all and letting them sit a couple weeks like I usually do, and decided against it.

Snippets will be 100-500 words.

Rules:
1. One per person, please.
2. AUs and mirror!verse fics are okay.
3. As usual, het, slash, femmeslash, gen requests are all okay.
4. Your request should begin: "The one where..."

Standard rules apply, if you need to know if I know a fandom, just give me a shout and I'll let you know!

If you want something else, ask me about it, or just request it. If I'm not familiar with the fandom/characters you request, I'll ask you to prompt again!

Emi's addition: I make no guarantees that I will get to, or be inspired by, each and every prompt. But I'll try! ETA: Whee, okay, I really have enough now, thanks. ETAA: More polished versions here.

*: [livejournal.com profile] lomedet and [livejournal.com profile] tigerbright, this one's for you. Don't let me forget to include the making out.

That was Mirrorverse, in case you didn't guess from the context -- and that it was me requesting, I suppose. ;-)

[since I still have the idea for Rand, too.]

Leah stands up, letting Joanna lean against her for one more moment as she looks Chapel full on, sees the light in her eyes that's more than planetside sunlight, the quiver of her lips. Kirk isn't known for his patience, so Leah just holds out her hand, as steadily as she can with excited fear swooping through her and her back prickling under Kirk's stare, and her voice is calm enough to do a Vulcan credit. "Christine. It has been an honor."

Christine smiles, a little stiffly as if the muscles atrophied, closing both her strong, capable hands around Leah's. "Leah," she says, and there's life there that Leah never heard in their five years together, just in the swing of her name in Christine's voice. "Leah, thank you. I'll care for your daughter as if she were mine."

"I know you will." Leah's face hurts, which is how she knows she's grinning, and Christine's eyes glimmer brightly. Kirk snorts, but instead of taking the warning, Leah feels her recklessness and resentment crack their dam. He agreed to this, and he rarely lies, so she squeezes Christine's hands in both of hers, a lump rising in her throat, and wishes she could hug her.

But Leah's courage won't carry her that far, not after these five years. Christine pulls back first, always sensible; Leah bends to hug Joanna one more time, memorizing the softness of her cheek and the smell of her hair and her lanky thin-boned frame, then pushes her arms away and sets her hand in Christine's. "Be good and learn, Joanna," she says, and now her voice does shake, now Joanna's red-rimmed eyes spill over, but Leah swallows around the lump, and Joanna nods solemnly. "I'll see you soon," she promises as she lets go, and Chapel takes the cue and turns, leading Joanna away.

Kirk steps up, and Leah's shoulders stiffen; he calls, "Good luck, Cadet Jojo!" as he wraps his arm around her back, and Joanna glances back at them but Chapel steadily keeps walking and Joanna obediently follows. "Look at our little girl," Kirk murmurs, mouth brushing Leah's ear, fingers biting into her shoulder, and she lets him have a shudder, doesn't bother with a retort as she keeps her eyes on their retreating figures. Leah knew he'd make her pay for this goodbye, the price for Joanna and Christine's freedom, but he lets her watch until the big steel doors of Jellico Academy close behind them, and at least now she's the only one who's paying.

I really love all of these snippets you've been posting, although snippets is probably too small a word for these considering the punch they pack. Leah is amazing but what I expect: strong, exhausted, isolated and a good person despite that. It's Kirk that drives me crazy. I think I'd die if you ever did a fic from his POV, but figuring him out is such torture that I also don't want to give it up.

He's such a classic abuser, so human in that way, and maybe it's just that I don't understand those people either. I keep looking for flickers of humanity somewhere, and at first they seem like they're there to be found: the hand held out for hers, the kiss over her bruise, feeding her ice chips oh so gently. But there's something cold about this Kirk, that keeps Leah's fear so real. Other people have written mKirk as a man who's violent because he loves with no morals or boundaries, and he's frightening but strangely romantic in his obsession. Your Kirk... I think nuKirk loves, other mKirks obsess, and your Kirk just possesses. A Quaking Star has Kirk comparing Leah to the ship, and I think that's probably apt. He'll take her into port when she needs fixing, grin until he glows at her undercarriage, and drag her through Klingon fire without a second thought.

Ok, this got a bit rambly. In short: your Kirk frightens me, and I doubt I'll ever understand him, and I love that.

I LOVE your comments, you know that? You get right to the heart of my Kirk, who sees love as identical to possession (in part because he was once a toy himself, this vicious universe being what it is).

And I owe you and [livejournal.com profile] mardia a story from his POV, that I do. I know just the tale, too.

Thank you! :-)

Re: Kirk being a toy, I definitely got that sense with his reference to Pike in a Quaking Star, although I wouldn't be surprised if there were others. It seems like it would have to had have happened earlier and often to really sink in.

My mental equivalent of the Bar Dare for this nuKirk: "I'll give you the weapon to kill your current master if you'll come work for me. You man enough, boy?" :D
