I have a flinching horror of pale British guys taking their shirts off... and the movie really toned down the sex -- even the sex jokes -- from the play, so the flagellation scene would have felt way out of balance. (Of course maybe they were trying to tone down what they could to avoid an NC-17... it wasn't like they were going to be able to leave out the blood.)
